Default GTA V set for September 17th release

Originally the release date was given for sometime in the spring, but it has been pushed back to the fall. However, Rockstar has added an actual date to the release now, so we might see it come September on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Grand Theft Auto 5 launches Sept. 17 | Joystiq

Of course one reason that publishers release these dates is for their investors. By some estimates GTA V is expected to make $600 million in revenue when it is released.

I guess this sucks for the people who can't wait to play this game, but I find myself somewhat unenthusiastic about it.

Decent project management seems to be a dark art in the world of video games.... Seriously, how do companies keep getting it this wrong?

I was looking forward to playing it on the long summer nights with my mates. Disappointed, but doesn't put me off of buying the game.

If it took them this long to realize they wouldn't finish it on time, why was the release date moved from spring to September? Wouldn't they have been looking at a very narrow window, like I said, if it took them until a few months before their original release date to figure this out? And why skip the whole summer seasons? This kind of management just makes me facepalm. Not like I really gave a shit about GTA V anyways. It's not even revolutionary or something. Just a sequel to GTA IV. Most over-hyped game of all time? Rockstar = idiots.

till summer Sony and Microsoft release new consoles, so GTA will out as for next-gen consoles as for current gen. And gain more money as result.

Without doubt it won't take long for next-gen. all PS3s of past, present and future are fully pwned by hackers now, Sony is on all feet

Makes sense to invest a few more months to implement higher quality options for the new console generation. Actually somewhat surprising that they didn't make it exclusive for the next gen consoles yet.

Making it exclusive to next-gen consoles would severely curtail their potential market, and therefore their profits. I think we'll be seeing a lot of cross-platform releases between current and next generation consoles for months, potentially even years, after the new platforms have arrived this time around. Development costs are simply too huge to limit yourself to a smaller install base, and the graphical improvements in the opening months of the new generation are rarely sufficiently great to exclude previous platforms.

It would curtail the publishers market, but if they get enough cash from the console maker in return they won't care.
Companies like MS lose money making consoles, so motivating people to buy the next generation is important to them. The logic behind consoles is to force customers into a mini-monopoly. Wouldn't be the first time exclusive publication would be used as incentive for consoles either. Maybe a title like GTA is too expensive for such deals though.

The best thing for them (MS or Sony) would be to initially release GTA for the new consoles and a bit later for the old consoles and after that to PC.
