Default Several Electronic Arts games to be retired
Last time EA shut down services, the Burnout and Need for Speed series, as well as several sports games, stood in the line of fire. Now, the time has come for the Sims 2, Battlefield 2, Medal of Honour, and a variety of sports games, to be retired from EA's online services. This means that features dependant on the Electronic Arts servers will be unavailable, with some games losing their multiplayer sections entirely. A full list is available below.

f that list, the only ones I have are Sims 2 and GoldenEye: Rogue Agent for PlayStation 2. I have never connected the thing to the internet. Looks like I may never get around to it after all.

I still play BF2 from time to time out of nostalgia so I was surprised to see it at the top- but the quote only says the console versions of it is going to lose their official servers?

I believe the PC version is attached to the GameSpy network, so players will still be able to host and join multiplayer sessions on PC. The console version, however, is based on EA's proprietary servers and will therefore be shut down. As I recall, GameSpy is in a bit of trouble too.

I notice you say Burnout Series is on there, but Burnout Paradise is not on the list? Is that still supported?

I quite liked the game, but find it hard to believe people still play it.

Not entirely certain, but last I played the multiplayer seemed functional. If it's not on the list, then it should remain active until otherwise reported. It should be in the clear, for now.

Can anyone explain why these shut-downs are a problem in the first place on PC? Isn't there a better way to do the server list than Gamespy - isn't that just an easy and cheap way to do it? I don't understand much about code, but yeah I suppose server browser lists are some kind of SQL tables which requires a server to be running.

But what beats me is that how could running the list cost $ 10,000 for such games that do not even have a lot of servers. It shouldn't take that much bandwith.

Is a P2P server list technologically impossible?

P2P lists are not technologically impossible, its just that nobody has come up with a workable system, or has volunteered to maintain the code. If such has happened, then it hasn't achieved enough popularity to actually use. Simple P2P lists are terrible, there has to be some content filtering.

P2P Checklist

1. Popular client/browser
2. Plugin support (to add games in the future).
3. Ping/lag/region filters (Don't want a game that is too laggy).
4. Mod/map/player filters
5. Anti-cheat/anti-hack protection
6. People with the upstream bandwidth to run servers.
7. The ability to mimic old WoN/Gamespy/etc infrustructure.
