... And keyboards across the world cried out in terror.
I was sort of hoping they'd have gone with Demon's Souls instead, since I found that to be the better game. Fortunately, it appears to go from the rather bright atmosphere of Dark Souls, back to the grim and gritty environments of Demon's Souls, so it's partially there. As an added bonus, this time it appears to be developed for XBox 360, PS3, and PC simultaneously, which will hopefully cut down on the amount of problems associated with bad console ports.
I'm aware of that, but I'd rather they'd done a Sony exclusive sequel, than do an entirely different game that tries to be Demon's Souls, but fails horribly at that.
I don't think Sony were willing to do a sequel though, which is why they had to take this approach. If it wasn't for the fact that Sony only owned the name we wouldn't have even had Dark Souls. I'm just thankful that the only thing Sony owned was the name; Sony being Sony, they could have been complete dicks about it and litigated Dark Souls into oblivion.
How do you feel it 'failed horribly'? I was under the impression that Dark Souls was highly thought of by most people.

Just because a majority of people believe something doesn't make it true. I, personally, found Dark Souls to be rather uninteresting in comparison to Demon's Souls. In Demon's Souls, if you got killed you lost up to three quarters of your health, and you were unable to summon or be summoned. In Dark Souls, you maintain your health, and you can't get invaded, of course you can't summon allies either. I also prefer Demon's Souls world tendencies and the hub over the bonfires and the global map in Dark Souls. Not to mention, the combat in Demon's Souls was fluid and easy to learn, but difficult to master. In Dark Souls, it just feels clunky and unresponsive at times.
Overall, I just think Demon's Souls was a better game. It doesn't mean Dark Souls was bad, as I enjoyed that quite a lot too, but it certainly isn't a spiritual sequel either. Then, my opinion may be a bit swayed by the fact Demon's Souls still has a lot of players active, which means the metagame is very much visible, but the PC version of Dark Souls is empty.
Well, I hope Dark Souls 2 will work out. I'll probably get it on day one, assuming the PC port is playable out-of-the-box this time around.
