hourglass in middle of NFSIV screen

There's an hourglass in the middle of the screen when I use NFSIV. What's up with that? Any details on how I can get rid of it? please - in puter idiot language thanks.

I find that just restarting the computer works. Don't ask me why, but it gets the job done.
