Video game regulation, parents or the government A US Senator has called for a ban for all video games with violent or sexual themes in them. This ban would prevent teenagers (and children) from purchasing violent (and sexual) video games, even with parental permission. There is no scientific evidence linking violence to video games. So who do you think should be in charge of what teens and children play, the parents or the US government? We already have the ESRB, and most stores won't sell mature games to a minor without their parents okaying the transaction or confirming identification. Hell, just the other day at GameStop I saw a man who appeared to be in his 40s get asked for his ID to pre-order a mature game. I too was also asked for my drivers license. I for one am outraged at this, it should be up to the parents, not Uncle Sam. Quote:

Re: Video game regulation, parents or the government Basically, people should have the right to decide for themselves. I am a father of two. My wife & I kept an eye on our own kids, that goes with the privelige of having children. I dont agree with the government dictating whether or not a person can play a game. The vast majority of people know right from wrong. A game is entertainment. It doesnt make kids go out and kill people with chainsaws. Kids see violent films on tv every day, we dont have a member of govt in the room turning the tv off. Obviously, no one is going to encourage a 5 year old to play doom 3 or quake 4. We are not stupid, we know where to draw the line when a child wants a pc or console game. We dont want to live in a dictatorship!! |
Re: Video game regulation, parents or the government You mean California State Senator - NOT a US senator, need to change the title of the thread. Anywho, a Democrat - Leland Yee pushing this, no surprise there. |
Re: Video game regulation, parents or the government Put the rating on the box and let the parents decide whats ok for their kids. The government has no business telling us what games we can and cannot play. |
Re: Video game regulation, parents or the government Who should decide? The parents of course. Video games are an easy scapegoat to draw attention away from the real issues that contribute to violence in young adults. Issues such as their integration with the community, the quality of their parents, their hopes for the future, and the examples of their elders. Twenty years ago it was music, violent movies, teenage mutant ninja turtles; games are just the latest scapegoat. Of course even if they wanted to fix it, it's not politically expedient to sit down and start blaming people for the behavior of their kids.... And that's all this regulation crap is. |
Re: Video game regulation, parents or the government Unless they outlaw adults distributing violent video games to minors, this law is largely pointless. Minors will still have access to them. Strange that no one is insisting that minors be banned from viewing rated R movies regardless of whether or not they are accompanied by an adult. |
