Default I Have A Rather Strong Urge To Play An FPS: But WHICH?

For the last year or so the majority of the time I've spent gaming has been on MMOs so I've missed out on many decent FPS's.

Anyway... For the past week I've had a REALLY strong urge to play a First Person Shooter online against other players. I've always been into FPS's but haven't played one for a while due to spending so much time on MMOs. Having looked around I noticed that in around 20 days or so "CoD: MW2" is coming out, which will be great. The thing is, I would really like to play one right now. I have this weird urge to play an FPS game as a sniper & get some nice long range kills on other players.

Here's a list of online FPS games I have right now, but haven't played in a while:

- Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
- Call of Duty: World at War
- Team Fortress 2
- CS: Source
- Battlefield 2

I installed Battlefield 2 the other day, although after the first 10 minutes or so I got rather bored & as stupid as it may seem I think it's because in the back of my head I kept thinking it was so old & not worth playing anymore.

So I was then looking on the Internet for a decent FPS to buy & I thought about Modern Warfare 1. The thing is, would it be worth buying considering there's only 20 days or so left until MW 2 comes out, as I'll definitely be buying MW 2.

If not, I guess I could always reinstall 'CoD: WaW' & play that until MW 2 comes out. OR... if possible maybe you guys wouldn't mind letting me know of a decent FPS (with fairly large maps so I can do some decent sniping etc) to buy until MW 2 comes out. I was considering buying "Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising" although I've heard nothing but bad reviews about it so I didn't really want to risk wasting my money.

Anyway, that's about it for now. Thanks in advance, and hopefully I'll find something to fulfill this FPS urge I've been getting recently.

Don't bother with MW2; it will not be a fun experience for PC gamers. No dedicated server support or mods at all; it will be entirely based on matchmaking run by Infinity Ward. But that's a story for another thread.

Get Call of Duty 4, the original Modern Warfare. Even when MW2 comes out, it will remain popular; no clans are going to be playing MW2 competitively.

You already have TF2, which is, in my opinion, the most fun multiplayer game ever made.

You might want to consider Left 4 Dead 2 which comes out in November as well.

And, if you don't mind going a tiny bit older, Unreal Tournament 2004 is a classic. You should be quite happy with the sniper rifle and lightning gun

Also, welcome to the forums!

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I fell asleep

Anyway... Sorry to sound like a "noob" but what exactly are dedicated servers, and why won't MW2 have any?

Thanks.

Thanks.
A dedicated multiplayer server is a computer set up specifically to organize the distribution of data to those who play on that server. The alternative would be a local server, meaning that a player runs both the game and the server for sending around multiplayer information on his own PC.

A dedicated server is usually better, there is less network lag for other players and your own PC has more resources for running the game itself. It also allows players to customize the game by adjusting the server-settings.

Beats me why they don't want to include dedicated server support for MW2. Maybe they can save some money that way. Together with the price-increase for that game you are actually paying more not for the same but you are paying more for less. Gotta love greedy developers.

The decision to not allow dedicated servers was all on IW (the developer), not Activision (the publisher).

TF2 is a game I put at least 3 hours into everyday and have been for the past year or so. I never get bored of it.

I love the different classes and the amount of support and new content Valve provides for it.

If you enjoy relatively long range engagements, I'd suggest Operation Flashpoint, or one of the ARMA games. It's possible to engage targets up to around 2 km depending on the rifle.

Example (He's using a script for the bullet cam):

This signature unintentionally left unfunny.
