Formations The manual suggests phalanx formation for manahoars and semi circle formation for hand-to-hands units. What's your strategy about formations ? |
I use phalanx formation for manahoars... Ranged and Flyers: semi circle formation, ranged sometimes line formation. Melee: circle/line/wedge formation http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif |
phalanx for manahores semicircle for ranged line for melee. ------------------ Ethereal Arcane is the most shrouded elementalism of all time only I hold the power of the arcane. |
What? You use Skirmish formation for meelee! That's the best thing for a forward attack, Wedge for fighting people or troops from left and right. Range em... Line formation for all of em. That way you're air units won't get hit in the head by a bomb or a rock. [This message has been edited by Mm-_- (edited 03-04-2001).] |
I use phalanx on everything but melee. Sometimes i put a warmonger at my side in line formation. I use line/skirmish formation on pyrodactils too. To keep them from oiling my creatures/themselves. ------------------ "I for one can offer you untold KNOWLEDGE." -Stratos, the one true god. (After patch 3!) line for manahoars, phalanx for everything when traveling across map, usually line when setting up for attack/defense. sometimes semicircle for ranged. |
Does anyone send their army in in waves, i find it quite effective when u have alot of diff lvl creatures, 1st hvy melee, then medium, then flying, and low lvl sending them after ranged/ melee. And i always have 2 groups of archers well spread out to prevent area damge. ------------------ "don't quote me" |
Overall, I have the feeling that formations are not really important. Especially if your groups have less than 6 creatures. |
I usually use Wedge for melee, Phalanx for ranged, and Skirmish for air. Since formations are generally forgotten once a fight starts, as long as your ranged are in the back and the melee at the front it doesn't seem to matter much. If I have a big army, however, I put my artillery in Line so they have a clearer line of fire. OTOH, I don't have any artillery in my custom http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif. And if I have a lot of Air creatures, I tell them to go into Circle while moving so they don't have so much chance of falling down the abyss, and also so they won't get left behind when I Teleport. ------------------ AKA 'Samuel' online In AP 101, 2vs2 was beginning. Eldred: "What happen?" Shakti: "Someone set us up the Volcano." Zyzyx: "We get signal!" Eldred: "What!" "Telepathy cast." "It's you!!" Marduk: "How are you wizards!" "All your souls are belong to us." "You are on the way to desecration." Eldred: "What you say!" Marduk: "You have no chance to resurrect, make your time." "Ha ha ha ha." |
I use phalanx for manahoars, wedge for melee, line for ranged, and semi-circle for flyers. Oh, and I make them all guard me. I find that when you teleport, creatures will follow no matter what formation they are in, as long as they are guarded to you. (Obviously, they have to be near you, you can't tell a Taurock, which is doing something in the distance to guard you and then count on it to follow you when you teleport seconds after.) ------------------ 35! 35!!! |
I agree with Cortex, although I find that flyers are completely useless. They die WAY to quickly. |

http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif Flyers are great against melee units. So for example when you see some trolls coming, create some flyers... If you see some ranged units coming, create some melee And if you see some Air Units coming, create some ranged units... So when you notice that your flyers are dying, then your opponent is apparently anticipating with ranged units, you have to build some melee units then to have these ranged units killed. http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif [This message has been edited by Idolater (edited 03-05-2001).] |
But Idol, aren't you then just playing catch-up? How do you win? paks ------------------ Paksman-MTK- "Only fools are quoted." -Anonymus |

Skirmish for melee, Phalanx for ranged, Wedge for flier, phalanx for manahoars, line for auxilliaries. |
What's with all the people having their creatures walking behind them? The only things I have in semicircle are my Mhoars. Ranged in line and all melee in skirmish. Walking in front means getting the first bash. ------------------ "Wha?" |
ranged and flyers don't need to be in front, because they can hit your opponent from behind... http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif |

Lvl 1 ranged in a line on either side of me. Lvl 1 fliers in semicircle behind me. Lvl 1 Melee either Skirmish in front of me or semicircle behind advanced melee. Lvl 2 support in phalanx behind whatever I want them to support. Advanced melee in Wedge formation in front of me or seperately. Advanced fliers in Skirmish formation seperately. Seige in semicircle behind me, except Boulderdash and Abomination (to avoid friendly fire) |
I tend to use the line for my ranged but it depends on the situation. Like if there isnt a lot of room eg. a canyon ill use wedge. ------------------ Wait a second....thats amazing |
do you guys go into battle yourselves with your creatures guarding you, or do you send your creatures out independant of your wiz? ------------------ SoulMuncha, Geomancer "There is no spoon" ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US! |
Soul Muncha: I usually have them guard me but maybe send some sped-up scythes or applicable level one melee units ahead to the enemy's ranged. If the enemy is building a manalith eg the middle one on Alpine Meadow, I'll send them in as quickly as I can to take the wizard down. ------------------ ***Alan Grey- Editor of Sacrifice Warfare*** Coming.....but not neccessarily soon. http://www.geocities.com/grey_lives/Grey2.gif |
