PC Gamer's GOTY Awards. And the winner is ..... .... not Sacrifce ..... RTS of the year went to Red Alert 2 .... Sac wasn't even mentioned in the runners up section or anywhere else .... this is quite odd when one considers the fact that Sac's PC Gamer review was 90%, while Red Alert 2's score was only 85%. It's very dissappointing when a game like RA2 that uses an ancient engine, and does NOTHING to move the genre forward, can beat out ridiculously fresh and innovative game like Sacrifice for GOTY. With each new issue of PCG I lose more and more respect for it. At least there was a cool new Sacrifice Ad that immediately followed the GOTY section ;^") To be fair I do agree with it's overall GOTY pick of Deus Ex .. but still ...Red Alert 2?? That is just several different kinds of wrong. ------------------ Smurph It Down!!(tm) |

their afraid of new and better things... then again, sadly, that is the history of America ------------------ http://www.soulcalibur.com/images/busts/vol.jpg "I was once Earth's most dangerous and destructive enemy. Now I am its only hope." |
This is the last time I'll bump this... I just want to know what people's thoughts are .... ------------------ Smurph It Down!!(tm) |
You know what our thoughts are! You are on a Sac-Forum, and you know every Sac-Gamer will hate C&C series.... ------------------ #sacrifice @ irc.enterthegame.com >>Learn how to get there<< |
I don't think they will necessarily hate the C&C series .... but your right .. I doubt I will find to much sympathy For PC Gamer awarding RA2 best RTS of 2000 in these forums .... ;^")* ------------------ Smurph It Down!!(tm) |
Is this the american version? cos the american PCG is not as well-respected as the british one ('tis a fact). The british one hasn't done the awards thingy yet, but they loved Sacrifice. |
You do realize that the EIC of PC Gamer(USA) happens to be a Brit right??? His name is Rob Smith. His influence is one of the biggest reasons why RA2 was RTS of the year. When he was at PCXL, he gave Half-LIfe an 11! out of 10 stars stating "Xen alone is worth the money". He also gave Quake 3 a 10 and "stands by that review" today. He also predicted that Daikatana would be GOTY. Maybe PC Gamer(UK) is more well respected because there is an American EIC running that magazine. Heheh ... I don't know if this is true or not, but it sure would be funny if it was ...... ;^")* ------------------ Smurph It Down!!(tm) [This message has been edited by Smurph (edited 02-04-2001).] |
I'm not syaing to diss Sacrifice, but the Engine is not everything, alot of games have low-end engines, yet are still very addictive. But RA2 was seriously annoying, especially since it had really bad multiplayer support. |
This is Funny Did you know that from the Dune 2 engine cam C&C. Westwood stated Red Alert had a new engine but it was still the same engine with minor enhancments. Along comes Tib Sun and Westwood stated a new engine, but it was still the original engines with just cosmetic enhancments (bad ones at that). So now we are at Red Alert 2, 7 years after Dune 2 and the Engine still lives on. And out of all the games run with that engine. The engines original game is the best..... by far. And most of Westwoods games suck arse now. |
Agreed engine is not everything but innovation should be for GOTY. And this year was pretty short of innovative products. So it really makes me sick when i see a product like RA2 getting awards they don't deserve just because the testers always like the products they already know somehow, can be mastered in less than an hour and of which the publisher puts the biggest ads in their magazines. Just my 0.02 threat ------------------ Bob says: Science cannot remove the terror of the gods |
I find this disturbing too.. I mean I LOVED C&C when it came out... Dont think I played any game more than that.. but, now that they've released the same game 4 times... its just stupid. The fact that it can recieve the game of the year award is just plain frightening. Are they on crack? ------------------ Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. |
Looks like awards can be bought. As for the British PCG being more credible? Ha! They lost all credibility when they gave the Braveheart game a 'Editors Choice' award because the publisher was a big sponsor of the magazine. A final tip: Dont buy gaming magazines. They are overpriced and out-of-date. NONE of them are any good. Stick to the net. If you want some good game comparisions try: http://www.gamerankings.com It bases ratings on an average of as many reviews as possible. Not only does it give a more accurate impression of a game but it also shows which magazines/websites are staffed by idiots. PC Zone seems to be one of the top contenders. I could not possibly agree MORE with that last statement! Gaming mags are quite crap. Don't even get me started on PC Zone UK. Sacrifice: around 68 - 70 percent I think! I used to like PC Zone because many of the staff had a funny but sick and or sarcastic sense of humor that appealed to me, making reviews funny to read. Now the mag has gone WAY downhill, as have all the other ones. That last advice is right. Stick to the net. Read on-line site reviews, and more importantly...USER REVIEWS! |
The problem with gaming websites is that you can't fold up a gaming website, put it in your lunchbox, and read it during you breaks .. .... so no matter how bad the print mags get, I'll probably continue to subscribe to at least one of them ;^")* ------------------ Smurph It Down!!(tm) [This message has been edited by Smurph (edited 02-04-2001).] [This message has been edited by Smurph (edited 02-04-2001).] [This message has been edited by Smurph (edited 02-04-2001).] [This message has been edited by Smurph (edited 02-04-2001).] |
I think I may have set a record for the most edits on one post! (See Above) http://www.veforums.com/wink.gif ------------------ Smurph It Down!!(tm) |
I expected Red Alert 2 and Diablo 2 to garner a lot more awards than they have so far based alone on crazy sales. That they haven't gives me a little more faith in the gaming community, but that PCgamer gave RA2 RTS GOTY... You guys are officially on a raunchy kinda crackrock. |
I think that they were afraid to classify it as an RTS... but the confusion didnt stop Deus Ex from getting the top spot(which was deserved, somewhat...but I like RPGs...) What cracks me up is that RA2 got best multiplayer support... I do like PCGAMER because they are rather funny and they do alert me to new games coming out... ------------------ I am not responsible for the above message, Apparantly my cat has learned to type... |
Let's get this out of the way: PCG is crap, and for more reasons than their game of the year. {I also find it really hard to believe that they gave BraveHeart an Editor's Choice when their sister mag PCXL gave it a suicide award} Also remember, for every lie their is a grain of truth; and PCG's EIC is Rob "Get Off My Crackpipe" Smith. Now, I'm not saying that Rob's actually on crack, but there must be a grain of truth in their somewhere. ------------------ "There is a fool born every minute" - P.T. Barnum "And they rule the world" - Me |
Damn, PCG is really annoying. Especially Rob Smith. I agree with his score for HL, just not about the Xen part (ugh, jumping puzzles *shudder*), but Q3:A 10/10??!! Give me a break. Also, I seriously doubt he's on a crackpipe. Only a hallucinogen like LSD could make RA2 seem better than Sac. Well, with all the crazy colors, it might look a bit like Sac, but thats not the point. http://www.veforums.com/wink.gif Anyways, I probably won't renew my subscription to the stupid magazine. Its been getting worse and worse over time and the net really is better. Ahh, I wish PCXL was still around. At least that was funny. TheMad |
Like I said, there's a grain of truth in there somewhere. ------------------ "There is a fool born every minute" - P.T. Barnum "And they rule the world" - Me |
Well, Red Alert2 WAS FUN for a while. I was so excited when I bought it. It was really fun for a while, then I found out about Sacrifice. I got it as a B-day present on the 20th of December and haven't played RA2 since. But anyways, it was a good game. The graphics were only a little better than the before C&C games and the gameplay was pretty much the same. The only difference was that it was really fast paced and the game would last around 10 min. I think Sacrifice SHOULD have won that award though. It has new gameplay that hasn't really been explored before and it's great fun. Graphics and sound are awesome too! Anyways, Sac should have won but it didn't. Why should we care though, we love the game and so did many other pc magazines and reviewers. |
Personaly I think magazines are great if you don't like to sit in front of your computer for hours looking for new games and press releases. In a magazine (like PCG) you get alot of info about many of the new games on the way. I always read PCG or some other game magazine and then, when I've read about a new game coming out I get to the homepage of that particular game and check fo more info. So mags aren't really that bad. They are just don't comparable with internet. That's what I think. |
imho the first C&C was the best, and RA2 is just the worst from the entire serie.... |
