You people are by far the coolest then other game gamers :-)

Sup Dogs,
I just wanted to say, that from all the games i have ever played (which is probably too many), the online community of Sacrifice is by far the most unique and enjoyable to play with. Battle.net people are really cocky for the most part, and all think they are so much better then everyone.

Sure, we have had our problems, with some, well, i dont need to go there.

But 3 Cheers for eveyrone who plays Sacrifice!

Auxryn January 14th, 2001 08:44 PM

Agreed, this is probably the most tolerant forum I have seen in a long time.

TheOnlyCoolTim January 14th, 2001 08:50 PM

I think you have not seen enough game communities...

Team Fortress Classic has a great community going with its message boards...
Homeworld USED to have a great community on the Relic Message Boards but we got changed to a different moderator who basically destroyed it, and I left.

Generally Blizzard makes good games but with the most horrible communities... Starcraft is just about impossible to play multiplayer because of how horrible the community is...

Here is a good community too though

Tim

I agree Tim. I think that Blizzard was just swimmming in there munny to much, and didn't care enough about their community. People still play it alot though. I still think it is a fun game, (starcraft) but the people that play it are just, ehh. And you get your ass kicked SO FAST. You dont even know how.

Lets thank Shiny for giving their customers support though.

Ark January 14th, 2001 09:13 PM

I don't think Blizzard can be to blame for the problem with their community.

Something that you can see in almost ANY community (Especially online) is that the more people you get, the less 'quality' of a community you have. I have no idea why this is, but it's true. Go look at how people treat each other in a small town, then go to New York, LA, Chicago, or any other big city. HUGE difference.

Same thing with online games. I played this online game called Kingdom of Drakkar a long time ago (back when online games cost like $4/hour to play). There was maybe 50 people playing, and the community was TIGHT. Everyone new each other, everyone was polite.

Then go look at UO, or EQ. People treat each other like **** in those games http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif

It's the same thing with Sacrifice... look at the number of people posting here... not NEARLY as many as you'd see on a Blizzard forum.

I guess it all boils down to anonymity (err... I totally butchered the spelling on that word :P Sorry, it's late and spellchecker didn't seem to catch it! ). If you don't know the other person, and others don't know you, people seem much more likely to be an asshole.

That's just what I've observed in my 10+ years of online gaming. What do you think?

phishhound January 14th, 2001 09:29 PM

Ark, Ark Ark, you have a VERY good concept of online game. I have never thought of that. I dont think that it should be limited to 50 people though. I think the Sacrifices community is awsome as it is. Just connecting to a battle net chat room took about 5 min. And people do have more respect for each other in a small community, i totally agree with you 110%

Ark January 14th, 2001 09:42 PM

I agree, 50 people is TOO small. Hmmmm, what would the optimal number be, maybe a 200 - 300 or something? Of course, that's not total people playing the game, but the average that you run in to, who play during the times you play, etc.

Big-Floppy-Llama January 14th, 2001 09:46 PM

www.diabloii.net (In the sorceress forum) is where i had my best community experience. We talked during the game, shared items, trusted eachother, and when i stopped playing Diablo 2, I gave all my stuff away to the people i was closest to.

Asmor January 14th, 2001 10:50 PM

My best experience was with Heretic II. The community was probably 75-150 people at its peak, and pretty much everyone knew everyone else, and everyone was friends. Chances are if you joined a server you'd know every person who was on it, and you'd probably know who the admin was, too.

Sigh... The good ol' daze...

Prodigal January 14th, 2001 11:05 PM

I'm not sure sheer numbers account for the differences. I think certain types of games appeal to certain types of people. Fast games with alot of twitching, alot of explosions and little thinking will attract younger and more immature players than games which are purposely designed to tax a player's savvy and resourcefulness.

I've played the Age of Empires series over the years and it is a known fact that Age players are older and more mature than their Starcraft counterparts. Age takes more time, more patience, more micromanagement and more decision-making in general and therefore doesn't get nearly as many *k3wl d00ds* as SC. Within AoE/AoK deathmatch games attract many more youngsters than Random Map games. Comparing the forums at MFO (the top Age site) and Bnet is like comparing night and day.

I think certain games are predisposed to attract lamers.

phishhound January 14th, 2001 11:15 PM

Yeah, they deffinitly do. I mean, Barbies pet, what ever she does to those sheep (hahha, lama's old style, hahha) was on the top 10 charts at IGN.com And The Sims attracks people who have 10 min a day to play a game. Its all good though.

As long as you have gamers, you cant really go wrong.

TA and TAk, these were the best commutities i have played in. Anlmost every time i logged on the the Boneyards (Cavedog online service) there was always some there ready to help anyone who needed it, and there was easialy 350+ players.

Same with the TAk community, although not as big, it was the same as TA.

I think I once saw NoName_MIB in the Other Users bit of this board but I couldn't find any posts by him...

I am absolute not a refugee...lol! http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif

"refugee" is interpretated as unwanted leaving; I didn't wanted to participate on that forum "wanted". I actually got bored playing Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm...

I am sure that won't happen with Sacrifice, because I am enjoying playing this game more and more...Sacrifice is the best game I ever played.

Ekti January 16th, 2001 12:13 AM

One of the other reasons Starcraft attracts more immature people is that Blizzard's games are designed with low computer requirements so they can run on old crappy computers. Kids don't have the cash to keep buying new computers every two years, so they are stuck with buying old games or low requirement games. It's great that Sacrifice has high requirements and takes use of the awesome computing and graphics card power that is now available in newer machines. It also helps keep most of the kiddoes from coming into Sacrifice and ruining the game for others.

Fu$iL January 16th, 2001 04:00 AM

agreed. This community is the most freindly out there...

EVERY community has it΄s lamers.

@ ekti

I think this prejudiced style of thinking the young ppl are always the most rude or lame players is not right...

[This message has been edited by Fu$iL (edited 01-16-2001).]

phishhound January 16th, 2001 07:18 AM

Yeah, just beause they are youung dont mean much. I have played with many young gamers on Sacrifice, and some of them are pretty cool. I think that its when ythe community starts getting huge, and there arn't enogh *POLICE* to ake care of everyone.

Ahh, oh well. You know who else,

THe longest journey people are cool, but not AS cool as the people here.

Have you ever been inclined to, look at you toe lately?

I was initially quite pleased with this thread. Very inciteful, very upbeat. Especially with Ark, those are some sentiments that I have shared for a long time. I imgaine most people who behave poorly online would not do so when face to face. It's almost as if they are no longer interacting with anyone if they can't see them.

Unfortunately Ekti I think you're totally off the mark on this one. Implying that lower system specks yields immature gamers is totally incorrect. In actuality many kids have good computers by virtue of their parents. Us poor college students are the ones still sitting on our older comps.

I played online games when I was a "kiddo" and I behave the same way I do now. Sure my vocabulary is a bit larger and I'm probably slightly better at these games but my style has remained the same. Easy going, playing for fun, pretty much following the golden rule. Now I do agree with you on one point.
I find that with each passing year I tolerate the idiots online less and less. Personally I'm tired of people typing in all caps or kewl dood speech. Profanity and racial slurs are also unwelcome but appear to be more and more frequent.

That said I really think that the more popular a game is the greater proportion of losers you'll have. Let's compare two modern games, Diablo II and Sacrifice. I've played both extensively and let's face it. Diablo II is far more popular than Sacrifice. Therefore it's not unreasonable to assume that proportionally there will be more immature people online. Whether or not it's a better game is debatable but it is most definitely NOT Blizzard's fault. It's nice to see a company sacrifice eye candy to make a fun game available to a wider audience.
