Battlefield Heroes

Anybody else excited about (or even heard of) this game? Battlefield Heroes is a completely free shooter game being developed by DICE, the folks behind BF2 and 2142. Heroes aims to be less serious, with a more cartoony visual style and more accessible gameplay.

The game is about to enter another closed beta in February, so if you register now you might get a beta key for next month soon. The game itself is supposed to be released some time in the first quarter of this year.

I'm looking forward to it. It's based off of the Battlefield 2142 engine, but optimized to have lower hardware requirements, so more people can play. Besides, it's free, so it can only be so bad.

Here's the official website with all the info, and link to register for the upcoming beta.

I'm looking forward to it too, mainly because it's one of a select few games developed in the last few years that I can actually look forward to playing adequately on my antiquated hardware.

But also I love the cartoony nature of it, it shows that graphics quality isn't the be all and end all of computer gaming.

Indeed. Team Fortress 2 is a fine example of that. Simple, cartoony visuals, but it shows how much the gameplay itself is all that really matters. Would TF2 have been a better game if it had Crysis-level graphics? Doubt it.

It'll be free for a week or so, then EA will begin charging for everything. Need a plane? You have to buy access. Or a premium account.

The art style reminds me a lot of TF2, which I absolutely love. Style and gameplay. I don't think it's a rip off, but when I first read an article on it and at the time had never played TF2, I thought the soldier was TF2's soldier.

Looks neat, nevertheless.

Care to point me to where it says that?

Look at the past EA games. The Sims, their sports games, all of them. Milked dry.

There's only so much they can milk out of a free game. And even if they charge for additional content, the game itself will remain free.

Wait, what? They didn't even have a beta yet? Sheesh...

I've lost count of how many "guess who's been playing a lot of Team Fortress 2" jokes I've heard about Battefield Heroes' graphics.

Eh, I'm not particularly thrilled about it. The game is employing a Free to Play, Pay to Win system and that's an automatic no-no in my book. God forbid the game is successful and EA switches to the system completely. A new dark age of gaming is around the corner.

That being said, I singed up for Beta. I'm curious how this game will turn out.
