Battlefield Heroes

Anybody else excited about (or even heard of) this game? Battlefield Heroes is a completely free shooter game being developed by DICE, the folks behind BF2 and 2142. Heroes aims to be less serious, with a more cartoony visual style and more accessible gameplay.

The game is about to enter another closed beta in February, so if you register now you might get a beta key for next month soon. The game itself is supposed to be released some time in the first quarter of this year.

I'm looking forward to it. It's based off of the Battlefield 2142 engine, but optimized to have lower hardware requirements, so more people can play. Besides, it's free, so it can only be so bad. =p

Here's the official website with all the info, and link to register for the upcoming beta.

Battlefield Heroes - Free to Play, Cartoon Shooter

I'm looking forward to it too, mainly because it's one of a select few games developed in the last few years that I can actually look forward to playing adequately on my antiquated hardware.

But also I love the cartoony nature of it, it shows that graphics quality isn't the be all and end all of computer gaming.

Re: Battlefield Heroes

Indeed. Team Fortress 2 is a fine example of that. Simple, cartoony visuals, but it shows how much the gameplay itself is all that really matters. Would TF2 have been a better game if it had Crysis-level graphics? Doubt it.

It'll be free for a week or so, then EA will begin charging for everything. Need a plane? You have to buy access. Or a premium account.

Re: Battlefield Heroes

The art style reminds me a lot of TF2, which I absolutely love. Style and gameplay. I don't think it's a rip off, but when I first read an article on it and at the time had never played TF2, I thought the soldier was TF2's soldier.

Looks neat, nevertheless.

Care to point me to where it says that?

Yep. Either way, it looks like it's going to be shloads of fun.

Look at the past EA games. The Sims, their sports games, all of them. Milked dry.

Re: Battlefield Heroes

There's only so much they can milk out of a free game. And even if they charge for additional content, the game itself will remain free.

Wait, what? They didn't even have a beta yet? Sheesh...

I've lost count of how many "guess who's been playing a lot of Team Fortress 2" jokes I've heard about Battefield Heroes' graphics.

Re: Battlefield Heroes

Eh, I'm not particularly thrilled about it. The game is employing a Free to Play, Pay to Win system and that's an automatic no-no in my book. God forbid the game is successful and EA switches to the system completely. A new dark age of gaming is around the corner.

That being said, I singed up for Beta. I'm curious how this game will turn out.

They already had one closed beta, and anyone who participated in that is guaranteed access to the next one. They are still taking registrations for newcomers, though. Better hurry up!

You're telling me. If you really want to bitch about unoriginal graphics in a free game, go right ahead. =p

Any free game is going to have optional paid content, and that's inevitable. MMORPG's, FPS's, anything.

With a few exceptions, yes. But that's why I have yet to find a free game I can take seriously. To be honest, I'd rather pay for an even playing-field, then get slaughtered for free.

Re: Battlefield Heroes

I understand where you're coming from. I have faith that they will keep it fairly balanced, though. They do have a good history of that with BF2 and 2142. I have both games, but I never bought any of the expansions or bonus content for either, and I never got the feeling that I was suffering for it.

Re: Battlefield Heroes

i've heard of the game awhile ago, watched a few trailers a few months back. after that no one i was subscribed to on youtube had any trailers for it.

but i may try it.

also this game reminds me of both TF2 and battalion wars.

To be frank, there's not much innovation with Heroes. It's basically same old gameplay with a new (or old, if you play TF2) game engine. Nothing spectacularly new. As Zam says, the game itself will still be free; if it weren't, nobody would play it in favour of better EA games/mods (FH2, for example).

Battlefield: Heroes Runs on Source? I'm surprised, I had just assumed they stuck with a heavily modified Bf2 Engine.

No, it uses a version of the Battlefield 2142 engine, not Source. I think Pedantic was referring to the graphical theme, not the engine itself.

= Lagfest

Okay, I correct myself. Would TF2 have been a better game if it had Crysis-level graphics, assuming normal computers could run it as well as they do now?

Nitpicky enough? =p

BlitZ, The 57th January 31st, 2009 08:15 AM

Re: Battlefield Heroes

Alright.... But I'm speaking from experiencing from a mid-end computer. TF2 can still get a tad bit laggy when theres a full max player game... Making it have crysis-like graphics would be, more or less a cry-fest + lagfest.

P.S. cry-fest as in literally cry. Not CRYsis-fest.

Re: Battlefield Heroes

It all depends on your specs. Most games will rely more heavily on CPU power rather than graphics when it comes to large numbers of players on the screen at once. If you have dual GTX 285's in SLI on a 2.0GHz single core processor, the game will render beautifully and smoothly when there's not much going on, but introduce a bit of action and you'll lag hard.

Likewise, if you're running the new Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition, but with a 256MB GeForce 6600GT, then any high-resolution game will hardly be playable, but will not be slowed down much worse by having lots of action going on.

Yup, just the final graphics, not the actual engine.

Bottleneck?

My point, actually. If you're playing in a pre-loaded environment, the CPU shouldn't be doing too much work, so the graphics power can really show through. I was trying to illustrate that once the CPU has to start working, it becomes a bottleneck for the graphics card.

Well I've heard a ton on this game, one of my friends doesn't hesitate to tell me EVERYTHING about it every time he sees me

I may get the beta, probably will sign up when I get bored
