I am using the Graphics Blaster RIVA 128ZX which is listed among supportable types. I updated the drivers to those stated on the webpage. I have reformatted my harddrive a couple months ago so it should be pretty clear of excess crud. Any help would be appreciated.

Try this:

1. Set your desktop to 800x600x16bit color.

2. There may be some sort of conflict with background programs. To check for this, click start, go to run, and in the run box type "msconfig". Click on the startup tab, and uncheck all the items there except "Scan Registry" and "System Tray".

My settings were already at 800x600x16bit

I did what you recommended and unchecked all but the 2 in startup after running msconfig and no change, the thaum after this run looks almost identical to the first thaum i posted on here, except a different address on one of the stacks.
Any other suggestions? Thanks.

In dxdiag, click on the display tab and make sure that card isn't using AGP. If it is, disable it. Also, you might want to try reinstalling creative's drivers for that card now that you have DX8, or try nvidia's drivers for it :

I tried your suggestions and again nothing. the AGP _was_ enabled, but changing it didn't do anything. I loaded the game on a friend's computer to try and it works fine.
http://www.veforums.com/frown.gif It still won't work. Thanks.

I assume the problem is that video card. The drivers are not certified for DX7 compatibility, so you are at the mercy of the DX HAL to pick up the slack for the functions the card does not support. Try Nvidia's driver for that card, it might do the trick.

Just top be on the safe side, make sure there are not conflicts with background programs. To check for this, click start, go to run, and in the run box type "msconfig". Click on the startup tab, and uncheck all the items there except "Scan Registry" and "System Tray".
