Default Warning: Phishing sites

Hey all.

It seems there's phishers coming back around here to honor us with a visit. The latest was a guy named "Smartguy112". If you've received a link from him which took you to a page where you had to enter your password, change it right away. This site is bogus.

Tips to avoid being caught by phishers:

1) Always double-check the URL if you've received a link.
2) If something doesn't look right, it's quite possible it's not right.
3) Normally, if you're being linked to a public forum (Pub, General Discussion), you will never be asked for your password. It's viewable for guests too.
4) If you get caught, change your password ASAP.

If you get a PM from someone to a phishing site, please make sure you report it to either an admin or supermod. If you see a post, please report it to a mod of the forum (or a supermod/admin) with the report a post button (), or via MSN/IRC if the mod is online. Do not repost the link you've been given, as it might fool someone if a long-term member posts it.

That's pretty much it, I guess. Carry on.

Hmm. Why would they do that? In order to be able to spam with premade accounts, that might have reputation as valuable posters?

Good point, I keep getting emails asking me to update my paypal details by clicking THIS LINK and when you look at the URL behind it it goes to some .RU website.

And you know some people will do it.

Does it count as suspicious behavior/spam if someone uses the same message in completely unrelated topics, like the poster above me?

I am having a problem today with the whole Filefront site being overwhelmed by the "My Brute" game site, a game that a while ago was forcefully advertised seemingly by a member here on the gaming forum.

It's not more than a few seconds into the main Filefront forums page having loaded that I am whisked immediately to this game site. I tried blocking the site via the Host File, but then I can't even maintain a connection with Filefront.

For now I am circumventing the problem by using the "Stop loading this page" button (X) right after a page initially loads. Something definitely needs to be done about this.

For some time I have been skeptical about all the links people have been posting to free games. Personally I don't think it should be allowed. I never visited the My Brute site before when people were talking about it, now it's being forced upon me.

The problem is caused by an advertiser breaking the advert rules. I suspect that someone will be having words with the people hosting the advertising campaigns.

While we are looking at how to best disable this you can work around it by disabling the meta refresh in your browser.

In firefox, you can type about:config to get into the advanced options. Change the "accessibility.blockautorefresh" value to true, and this will disable refreshing the page and the external redirect won't work.

If your one of the remaining sufferers on Internet Explorer you can do the same by going to security zones and then the miscellaneous section. Set "Allow META REFRESH" to disabled and it will stop the redirect.

Actually in Firefox I solved the problem a simpler way following someone else's advice.

Tools\Options\Advanced\Accessibility\"Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page" enabled.

In Explorer (I am updated to 8), I see no such option as you mentioned. I'm using XP btw. In Security Zones, there is no Miscellaneous option. Nor did adding the My Brute site to the Restricted Zone keep it from loading. In fact I couldn't even keep it from loading by hitting the X button like I could in Firefox. Explorer just plain sucks IMO. Unless Opera is much more stable now, and more site compatible, Firefox remains to be THE browser.

I've never see phishers try to phish for forum information before. That must have been one pissed off banned member.
