Default Show your FPS ingame - Step by Step Instructions!

EDIT: I originally created this for people in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Forum, but it works for other PC games. Everything is the same except the profile you make at the very bottom. Enjoy

Do you want to know your FPS (Frames Per Second?) ingame? Do you hate FRAPS because it makes the game slower? Do you like cheese?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, read on!

Step 1:
Download the RivaTuner 2.0 utility and install it.

Step 2:
Start up Riva Tuner. You should be greeted with this screen

Step 3:
The next thing you want to do is enable some plugins. Go to the "Power User" tab and scroll down until you see "RivaTuner\Monitoring\Plugins"

Enable these plugins by right clicking and hitting the yellow light bulb icon.

If you want to monitor CPU temp, GPU temp, System or Video Memory dont forget to enable those.

Step 4:
Next, scroll up just a bit until you see "RivaTuner\Monitoring"

Make sure that "BackgroundMonitoring","EnableMonitoringPluginWizard","EnableOSDGroups", and "EnablePlugins" are all set to "1"

Step 5:
Now scroll down till you see "RivaTuner\Monitoring\FrameRate" and make sure that "ShowInOSD" is set at "1"

Step 6:
Go back to the "Main" tab and click the little arrow thing near where your card is listed.

Click "HardWare Monitoring" (The one with the magnifying glass)

Step 7:
Now you want to make sure the little red dot at the bottom is selected

You can see it is selected here.

Step 8:
Now click "Setup" and this window will pop up

You want to make sure that next to each thing you want to monitor it says "In OSD". Im not 100% sure what the checkmark means, but make sure its highlighted (just click on it). Now click "Setup" when you have "FrameRate" selected and this should pop up

Make sure that "Show framerate in on-screen display" is checked. You can now close this window (hit ok) and the other widows until you get back to the main RivaTuner window.

If you want to monitor anything else they follow the same method, just choose it in the list and hit setup.

Step I stopped counting:
All right, now you need to set up a way to start the server so you can monitor your stats.

From the main RivaTuner window select the "Launcher" tab.

Now click the green "+" arrow at the bottom to add a new item

You should get this window

Fill it in just as I have done here (you can use a different key though)

Hit OK on that, then click the green "+" key again and fill this in

This gives you a key to turn the monitoring off.

Step I can't go on!!!:

Ok, we are almost done. Now with the main window of RivaTuner open, if you hit the "Num +" (or whatever key you set it too) key you should see this pop up in the taskbar at the bottom. That means the server is running.

IMPORTANT!!!!! The RivaTuner Client (and server) must be running while you are playing the game for it to display your stats!!!!

If you hit the "Num -" key you should see this icon disappear.

Step we are almost done, I swear (just don't tell my parents):
Ok, now you want to make sure the server knows to monitor the game exe. Right click the monitor program and choose setup

Remember to right click the one with the green arrow, that is the server, the other one is the main RivaTuner.

Once that pops up you should get this screen.

Make sure that "OSD On" is selected, and then go to "Add Profile".

Now you want to find the "xr_3da.exe" file that is located in your S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (or whatever game you want to monitor) folder. In my case it was located at "C:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl\bin\XR_3DA.exe"

You can also change the color of the OSD display, move it around, etc... You can do this for any profile, or do it globally.

FINAL STEP!!!:
You can close all of that mumbo jumbo (leaving the RivaTuner and Server open) and start the game, if you did everything correctly (and i didnt leave anything out) then you should notice your FPS in the top left corner (and any other things you are monitoring as well)

This concludes my tutorial on getting this damn program to work.

If everything goes to plan it should look like this
Spoiler:

I am monitoring my GPU Temp, FPS, System Memory Usage, and Video Memory usage

Sweet program. How long did it take to make?

Oh and, I LIKE CHEESE! But where does it apply itself in this concept?

Does FRAPS really make in-game slower? This seems like a bit of a hassle when you can just flip on FRAPS. But good job anyway

Naw, unless Fraps is recording, it doesn't affect FPS at all. Unless your computer barely has enough RAM to work, but in that case, any extra applications will cause slowdown.

It might shave a couple of frames per second off at the most. You'd have to have either a really underpowered PC, or a really overworked PC, for Fraps to have any significant impact on its performance. Unless, as Kouen suggested, you start recording videos. Although even then I don't notice game-breaking performance drops.
