Metal Gear is the brand of assault mech which inevitably ends up getting built.

The main character is called Solid Snake.

Put them together, and shazam!

Sure, there's likely some underlying meaning, but it's pretty simple to see where they derived it from.

haha...when i consider it the "metal gear" portion makes enough sense but when I think of "solid" I just get the mental image of a black guy from the '70s doing the whole fist thing saying: "solid"

Yea. I remember thinking it was a bomb in the first one though because they called it a weapon of immense power. So they actually said it was a mech? Must have missed that I guess.

Yeah the actual name of the "mechs" is metal gear.

It's like a brand name. Like bradley fighting vehicles, panzers, etc; a model if you will.
