It actually states on the back of the box that an internet connection is a requirement. The problem is, even after you've gone through all the BS of going online and authenticating your game (or whatever it's called) you still have to connect to steam everytime you want to play something. If you want to play offline, you need to connect to the internet anyways to put it into offline mode. If your ISP is down, you're just s*** outta luck. How stupid is that.
Also, considering there are ways to both install & play steam games like HL2 without an internet connection (trust me, it can be done), it seems all their security measures for SP mode are pointless.

No, you can play in Offline Mode right off, no active internet required. It automatically goes into Offline without a connection, and it it doesn't, it can be set to.

I recently had a hard drive reformat and I had to re-download all my steam apps again *sigh* but I didn't need to re-install HL2 from the CD I have, it just all downloaded again. It took the best part of a day, and most of the evening but I got CS, CS:S, DoD, TFC and HL1 and 2 back to play again. No problems really with Steam here. The friends thing hardly ever works Pete, just use xfire instead. Unless you're on 56k I don't see how you can take 2 weeks just to play in offline mode?
Steam is blatent discrimination against dial up users, and is forcing people to use broadband, otherwise the loadup times and updates are just stupid. And seeing as most of the games if not all are all geared towards multiplayer its a bit sucky if you have a 56k. You're about as popular as a dose of e-coli in servers if you have a 56k lagging everyone else up.
I'm on dialup and Steam is the bane of my gaming existence. Most people play offline and this bullshit keeps us logged on for 5 hours to get the simplest damn thing done. HL2 is mostly respected and bought for it's great SP campaign, not it's sucky DM addon or CS. It's rediculous that they have to authenticify there files to make sure they aren't corrupt. If something there doing wrong is making software corruption rampant in mass copying to disc then they should fix that problem rather then taking the cheap way out and creating a program that forces people to update and register.
Not to mention their inflexible modding system thats a bitch to do anything with, imparticularly combine mods, because mods always have to contain a bunch of files not even related to them that override other mods files. Steam must DIE!
