Isn't unreal 2 like uber old and ugly looking? Why don't you buy yourself GuildWars, or Half-Life2.

Of the two, I would personally choose Mafia. Though I'm not sure why you're comparing the two, as they're distinctly different games.

Mafia has an extremely strong storyline and narrative. It's almost like being in a Godfather movie. It tells the tale of you, Tommy, getting into the Mafia completely by accident, and charts his life as he works for the Mafia and is faced with a few difficult decisions (which later come back to haunt him), and how he finally ends up in a café, telling his story to a cop in the hopes of getting the Mafia off his back. You'll do everything from forcibly obtaining protection money from old hotels out in the middle of nowhere, to bombing brothels, as you work for the Mafia.

There's some re-playability from the Free Ride mode. As you progress through the main game, you unlock areas and cars for use in Free Ride, which basically lets you run riot across the city doing whatever you want. Later you will unlock Free Ride Extreme, which allows you to complete very bizarre missions (some very bizarre, others less so) in your own time to unlock special cars (racing cars, experimental cars, and even an armoured car which is virtually unstoppable).

There's no multiplayer, and the main storyline is very linear. The fact that the story is well-paced, involving and very good is more than enough for me to be interested in this game, though some may not like the lack of freedom. Although Free Ride offers completely non-linear gameplay, there is only as much to do there as your imagination will allow.

The graphics were pretty good in the day, but compared to the modern offerings of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 they won't be as impressive anymore. They're still not too bad, though; they are used well to bring the city to life. And the sound is superb and very atmospheric; the soundtrack even won an award or two, I hear.

It's an excellent game, with a very strong, but linear, storyline that'll take you a while to get through. Free Ride is OK for a few laughs, but it'll quickly get boring. Free Ride Extreme is a lot more entertaining, but although the wacky missions are often hard to accomplish, once you've figured each one out you'll be able to race through them. But this isn't a mindless shooter; it's an intelligent story-driven game, and if that's what you're after in a game, Mafia couldn't be better for you.

I would also like to point out that you're not going to get arcade-style driving in Mafia, like GTA 3+. Unlike GTA, there is a speed limit which the police will enforce with speeding fines. Try to outrun the police and they'll call for your arrest. Get too many speeding fines and they'll arrest you anyway. Also, you aren't allowed to run past red traffic lights. Though, as with every law, if you can do it without being seen, you can speed and run red lights as often as you want. Just make sure the police aren't around to watch you do it and you're OK.

Also, the driving itself is more realistic, not just the rules of the road. When you crash, it hurts your health. And you don't just scrape your bumper and carry on at 150mph like you would in GTA either. You'll come to a dead halt (sometimes literally if you had low health to begin with) if it's a head-on collision. If you clip another car you might lose control of your vehicle. And remember that this is the 1930s; these cars are heavy and underpowered, so you'll just be pleased to reach 70mph. Handling is also more realistic too, so a handbrake turn is more likely to go out of control than it is to go where you want, assuming you can get it to do one at all. And remember, no power steering, so these metal behemoths won't turn on a dime.
There are also gears, which you can set to automatic or manual. I used to use manual a lot, as you could rev it much higher and thus accelerate quicker. This also plays a part in fuel consumption -- cars in Mafia use fuel. You'll very rarely run out unless the car you 'acquired' didn't have much to begin with. But if you're running low on gasoline, you can coast in neutral until you reach a fuel station and fill 'er up.

Finally, cars aren't solid blocks of metal and Mafia makes sure you know that. Before GTA: VC even thought of it, Mafia presented a game where you could shoot out tyres, and shoot through windscreens to injure the driver. This is especially handy in a high-speed chase (I say high-speed, but...); put your arm out of the window and shoot their tyres and they'll either slow down or spin around completely and come to a halt, allowing you to finish them off. If you're really lucky they'll hit something else and save you the ammo. And if you're a great shot you can hit their fuel; this won't blow up the car, but it will run out of fuel eventually. You're at risk of suffering all this as well, though.

As for the single player, its ok, but nothing special. The AI is not very good, but the maps look decent. Also, the weapons are cool-looking, and fun to play around with, but some take quite a bit of getting used to, which isn't great, seeing as the single-player is only short.

The storyline is nothing special either. Basically, you go after artifacts in every level. There are 7 artifacts, which if combained will lead to the destruction of the Earth, something like that. Seeing as there are 7 artifacts, there only about 9 levels, one of which is extremely short, as its a final boss level.

To sum up Unreal 2: Its a good game if you want an arcade-style first person shooter, that you can complete in a weekend. If your looking for a game that will keep you enthralled for longer, then buy Mafia.

Mafia is one of my top favorite games, great story, while after you beat the games single player story, theres not much to do(besides play it again, you will likely want to anyway) theres a free mission type mode where you go about grand theft auto wise, without missions, but it's a great game, I rate it higher then unreal 2.

Haven't played mafia, but maybe I should. Unreal 2 is really not good. It has graphics like UT2003/04 and is fun, it's like that with a singleplayer storyline, but I finished it in 2 days on hard without trying. And I'm crap at most games, I don't know why I bother. If you've got or played UT2003/04 you'd be better off getting Mafia.

There is a mod for UT2004 that adds the U2 weapons and maps, I think that's like thew XMP addon for unreal2.

cant go wrong with mafia. gta3 like gameplay but leans more towards historical accuracy , the graphics are better too.
