I have that problem too. I tried to add a friend to the 'friend' list, and it couldn't load. I haven't figured out why yet. Stupid post jumping.

I cant log into the "friends" network in steam...i try and i try, and i cannot connect....anyone else having trouble?

I know this does not help much with your current problem, but it will help with future problems, click start, settings, control panel, add or remove programs, steam, uninstall.

In short steam is a steaming pile of crap which should be removed, steam's buddy list has always been buggy as hell since it first came out.

The friends list is one of the few aspects of steam which are still very much unfinished. It is pretty much luck if you will get it to connect half the time. I expect soon there will be a large update to it.
Untill then i guess you will have to stick to Xfire or whatever.

FRIENDS has never worked. If you go to the Steam Forums you'll see that everyday there are like 2 or 3 people that begin a thread about that same issue. What's the answer? It's just not working right now and they are fixing it (they have been "fixing" it since I can remember, which is December 2004 when I bought HL2).

Yeah, you'll find a few commentaries from people that say that they actually have used FRIENDS, as well as you can find people that have said that they have seen the Loch Ness Monster or an UFO. You get my point?

In conclusion, if you want a service that tells you where your "friends" are, and which servers they are in, just download X Fire, a damn good software for gamers, and it's FREE!

I actually managed o log in when i first got it to set up freinds name (el_destructo) and then a week or two ago i logged in and it crashed, then my freinds name changed to my real name, and im waiting for it to become active again so i can change it back.

damn pos crap, i think that friends should never have been put in, XFIRE works perfectly everytime and is sufficient for anything. I have other problems though like updates stopping at 99% for an hour and then suddenly finishing for no reason at all,.
