Re: Refrigerator vs Fridge I took the liberty of asking doctor Google. It appears it's got something to do with the name of a brand, an abbreviation of the word Frigidaire. Could be something else, but then there would be lots of possibilities. |
Re: Refrigerator vs Fridge 'Fridge' is a colloquial term that is thought to have been derived from one of the first really popular brands of refrigerator in America called Frigidaire. The brand was so popular that almost all brands of refrigerator where called 'Frigidaire' and it's assumed the the word 'fridge' is an altered 'slang' word of Frigidaire. :) :P |

Re: Refrigerator vs Fridge Saunta Claus is derived from Sinterklaas aka Saint Nicolas, a Dutch tradition for children: the old Saint Nicolas in red clerical robes goes to visit children in early december together with his black helpers (Piet -> Peter or zwarte Piet -> Black Peter ... ). In the US they moved this day of celebration from december 5th to christmas and Coca Cola made him fit. The black helpers have been replaced by gnomes... Re: Refrigerator vs Fridge Actually, seems every European nation has their own version of him. Such as in England, he is known as Father Christmas. So indeed a green-clothed version did once exist. But by Catholic tradition, Saint Nicolas is actually the Patron Saint of Prostitutes, definitely NOT someone I want anywhere near my daughter. What you know of Santa today is nothing more than a commercialized version of the original myth. The original myth was that he also had a demon companion who travelled with him. Santa would give toys to the good children, but allow the demon to eat the naughty children. And then Capitalism grabbed onto him, and they morphed him into a holly jolly fat fellow who places gifts under your tree on Christmas night. |
