Sure it was the Bush era but we all still had some good old times in the pre facebook/meme internet days. With the crappy HTML and the funny captioned pictures of president Bush holding a cornstalk. Green Day's American Idiot had just rocked the airwaves and changed the tone of radio music forever. Metallica had just released the stinker St. Anger and many had feared they were gone for good.
You think the only people who are people, are the people who look and think like you.
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger,
You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew.

Reminiscing is fun isn't it.
Dookie > American Idiot
Back to the topic... Blame Obama?
Zapp: I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kif?
Kif: [sighs] "Sex-lexia".

Green Day Sucks, Metallica has sucked since like 1997, this forum is probably more active than the past 2 years, and I have no idea who you are.
Good old days of PC gaming? They were about 10 years in my opinion; mid 90's -2003/4. All the best games were around that time. Homeworld, Homeworld 2, Xcom, Knights of the Old Republic, The first Call of Duty, Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Free Space, Alpha Centauri, Mech Warrior 3, Diablo, Hitman Contracts, Rome Total War, the earlier Civ games, Bridge Commander, Max Payne 1 & 2, Deus Ex, Independence War....
That's like 17 games off the top of my head.
To be honest, I don't think we realised how lucky we were. There was like ten years of solid gold where there was nearly always something to play. There hasn't been a lot of good shit since then, or really any advances on the various genres.
Good games after 2005, what do you have? Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed (maybe), Supreme Commander.
And some various rehashes of old games that don't really do anything new or exciting other than upgrade the graphics and trash the interface to work on consoles. This decade of gaming, relative to the last, isn't over yet. But I'm not real optimistic it's gonna get great at the end and make it all worthwhile.
As for the why of it? Companies got big, games got expensive to make. People tried to appeal to the greatest portion of the market to maximise their ROI and consequently everything was watered down and the potential any real innovation was largely shunned. -shrug- High static costs, so to speak - reduces competition with an industry. If we're lucky, some tools will come along to make game making cheaper again.

Edit:
Master of Orion 2, Star fleet Command....
No room for Oblivion? Skyrim? Portal? Fallout 3? Left 4 Dead? All after 2005 and fantastic works in my opinion.
And yeah sure forums are pretty quiet than when I first came here but meh, happens to all things.
