Quebec's New Drinking Age CBC.ca | This Is That | Quebec Lowers Drinking Age to 14 It's 14... There's already a big drinking problem in Canada, alcohol is basically part of our blood. =p This is just bad though, bad bad bad. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Terrible... 14 year old's taking over the towns tavern. LMFAO  |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Yeah, that's the problem here. I think only Canadians will get what's really going on here. =p |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age You should see the bar in the town west of mine. Full of "Hillbillies". Most of the 21-24 year old's from the "Big Three", our three towns out in the middle of nowhere, drink there now and they constantly get into it with the old timers. This new group of guys I went to school with is quite rowdy. Many of these guys parents drink there and on occasion It can turn into quite the sight. I've witnessed my fare share of seeing all the "grown-ups" on one side and all the "youngsters" on the other cursing at each other and trying to get the other to throw the first swing. That was usually my time to call it a night... I don't go there anymore. It's just not my thing. LoL With these kids drinking amongst the elders I can only imagine... God I can only imagine what kind of buisness these bars are going to lose when grown men decide they just can't relax around immature 14 year old's who can't hold their alcohol and only drink because they think it's cool. God, what the heck does a 14 year old have to worry about that they need to drink to help them relax? Ha. :lulz: Tell them to go out and enjoy a joint or two, they don't need to drink regularly yet. Cheers, P.S. I can honestly say though, that when I was 14 I would have considered this one a victory... :) |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age wow, all those teens who will walk into your bars and start talking about how much their life sucks, or how much they "Love" their girlfriend/boyfriend. I feel so sorry for you. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Meh... Its not like we dont drink earlier then 19, which is the norm in Canada. Besides, Quebec has always been fucked up, and everyone knows it. <_< |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age It's not as attractive a thing to do if it's not illegal. A lot of folks believe that lowering the drinking age in a location might actually reduce irresponsible underage drinking. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Alcohol abuse seems to depend on what else is present in your culture. If kids are drinking maybe it's because your local culture is just a retail warren and that's all they've really got left. Or they're stuck in the middle of endless miles of frozen tundra.... =p |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Does it really matter? Its not like they're handing 14 year olds alcohol saying "go get wasted". Some 14 year olds drink, some don't, it could help put some off. In the UK you are legally allowed to drink as much alcohol at the age of 5 as long as you are with the property owner and he/she/they give permission. Doesn't mean 5 year olds are drinking... |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age I think it's now the time to point out that this was Canadian media trolling the country, Quebec isn't that stupid. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Christ that is low! But I must say, in Ireland with our 18 to drink, 21 to get into most clubs, its pretty obvious those laws practically don't exist in some places. 16 year olds raving and puking, lovely place. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Hehe, should read Scho's post. THe blog is from a while ago, and from a comedy show. |

Oh, LoL now I feel like a http://www.snaithprimary.eril.net/colourings/donkey.gif... I just did a quick read, didn't even occur to me it was a gag.. Good 1, Facepalm* |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Earliest age into pubs should be 16. The legal age for y'know. Otherwise there's a risk of becoming a dirty old man when you're drunk. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age It would be better to legalize marijuana to adults vs having drunk 14 year olds causing mischive and getting into trouble. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age It was fake? Well that was pointless... |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age 14? That's ridiculous! XD Who decided on that shit? And why? What were the ideas backing it? The lowest drinking age I can imagine that would not cause problems would prolly be 16 or 18. I'd say in the US and Canada, where one has to drive a lot, 18 would be best. In Europe (and a few limited parts of the USA), public transportation actually exists. In these places, having a lower age makes sense. Lower doesn't = 14 though. 16 should be the limit. Holy damn. Why don't they just legalize the green leaf instead?! |

PS: I know the article isn't real, just thought I'd get involved in the conversation. :) |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Wait, that was fake? Wat. I should have read the whole thread before I posted. Derpderp. Quickreading doesn't work when one is distracted. XD |

Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Yeah, alcohol is not good on the developing brain. Just think of what happens to children whose mothers drank during preggo. Obviously the results of kids drinking at 14 couldn't come close to the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome because they are already largely developed but 14 is still young. At that age, the brain has approximately 11 more years on average for progressive development. If one starts drinking that young, that development is clouded right off the bat. Chances are the damage won't be too bad in most kids but there are always exceptions and they can be really screwed over. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age The younger you are the easier it is to get addicted as well. Most people 19 and younger think alcohol and smoking have little to no effect on them. It's even worse when they go around telling people that is has no effect; despite what you think, don't tell someone it isn't bad just because you do it. I drink a lot of alcohol, I don't go around telling people it's good for you, I tell them it is bad for you, I just don't have an addiction yet. =p |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Yeah, cheers to that. There is this stigma about drinking and alcohol (and drugs in the past, but not as much anymore, still to a degree I guess) that makes them seem like positive, "cool" things to younger people. As much as they won't admit it for mostly political reasons, this stigma is supported by the companies that produce these things as it benefits them greatly. Getting adolescents addicted early in life is a good way to ensure long term profit in large amounts. According to my Abnormal Psych textbook, the majority of people who get addicted to such things begin in their adolescent years. I may remember wrong but I think the ages were between 12 and 21 approximately. ^ Each adolescent the tobacco companies can get hooked on their product is one more customer who will quite likely buy from them for the rest of their lives, unless they get the incentive and determination to quit. If you think about how much profit that ensures the companies that got them addicted, you will realize why they try to advertise to the youth instead of to adults. I think it was Camel that got in trouble for that a few years ago. People figured out that their signature animated camel was bringing in young people because he made smoking look "cool." Oh what a world where industry intentionally tries to get young people addicted to things that may kill them. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age Well corporations for the most part are amoral, they don't really think about the pros and cons of the people they're effecting. Which isn't always the best thing. =p Your textbook is right, almost all people who start smoking do it in their teen years, I can't think of anyone in my life who started smoking (cigarettes) after they had finished school. Then they try to justify their actions by saying "oh well it isn't that bad" (be it alcohol, cigarettes, weed, etc). Drinking is worse, but I hate smoking more, because of the second hand smoke, and inhaling smoke just doesn't seem like a fun thing to do. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age I don't really have a problem with the green smoke (as other posts I have made suggest ;) ) but yeah, cig smoke is gross. I've never smoked a cig in my life. Substance abuse is terrifying if you look into the details of it. I've seen friends disappear into cocaine, heroin, alcohol, and my own mother has disappeared into a cloud of prescription drugs... It's really scary to see what addiction can do to a person. I refuse to ever touch anything truly addictive. I do drink once in a while, usually just at parties or maybe a beer at the end of a long day, but not often. Addiction is scary. Heh. |
Re: Quebec's New Drinking Age That's awesome. Young alcoholics will do wondrous things. |
