Is this legit or a scam?

Some of you may have seen the videos my friends and I have made and put on youtube.

My question is, someone recently contacted my friend, who was responsible for the story and editing on most of them, through his youtube account.

This lady is claiming to be an MTV representative, and is willing to buy some of our footage for a supposedly upcoming reality show.

To me, it has scam written all over it. I wouldn't trust anything from youtube, I generally ignore any kind of contact.

I go to youtube to watch videos, not for social networking.

The problem is, how do I know that this isn't legit?

I mean how would someone from MTV actually contact us if thats all we had out there is our youtube page?

I know nothing of the business side of Hollywood so I don't know what the proper channels are and such.

Thanks

LC

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

Ask them to give you their other contact information, such as a phone number, business address, etc...

If it really was a MTV rep (which i doubt) they should have no problem giving you that info.

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

If I were you I'd forward it to actual MTV reps. Either way you'll find out if it's legit (which I doubt) or fraud, in which case MTV may want to pursue legal action against them. They have the money and power to do it.

Yup! Try getting information to the person who is claiming that she is an MTV representative maybe a name,

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

Boom!

Forward the youtube account details to MTV. If legit, I'm sure MTV would corroborate the details.

Or

Ask them (the potential scammer) for some other type of contact, email address, phone no. etc... THEN pass this on to MTV for corroboration...

I just used Corroborate for the first time ever online...

Anyways - I hope its real... but sadly it probably isnt - Im guessing russian mafia dooshbags...

It might not. Ask for details, then send to mtv.

(Ok, it probably is a scam :p)

NixiePixel on Youtube got a VERY similar message to this (exact same?), it was a scam.

YouTube - Copyright Infringement?

Execept, they said they were from SpikeTV this time.

We'll probably do that next.

What is this "Corroborate" you speak of? :p Is it like a whois?

I tried whois, then I realized its only for websites, not emails. Go me.=p

You mean the word?? LOL:rofl:

That was my feeling, but I couldn't convince my friend of that, in infinitesimally small chance that it might be legit.

Another question:

Who at MTV would we contact?

I just looked at their website and its a confusing mess of show advertisements. :meh:

Me neither.

Maybe they have a number we can call somewhere.:uhm:

BTW, my friend apparently got an attachment supposedly with a form in it.

Of course, I'm weary of attachments, but the virus scanner on his email said there was no threat, tho virus scanners can be wrong, and he is using AOL.

kow_ciller February 22nd, 2010 02:41 PM

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

What kind of form? Screenshots plz.

Oh, its an attachment, so we haven't opened it yet.

I was going to try to opening it in a Virtual Machine with VMPlayer but I don't know if viruses picked up in VM's can be transfered to the host machine?

EDIT: Tho its not the attachment itself, this should help some:

kow_ciller February 22nd, 2010 04:23 PM

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

You should be fine in a VM. if not forward it to me and I'll open it on my benching drive since I need to reformat that anyway.

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

Being that direct about asking where you want the payment sent sounds to me like they're crossing their fingers to get into your bank account and steal every cent you've got.

Ya, does sound kinda terse like spam usually is.:uhm:

Von II February 23rd, 2010 08:39 AM

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

Spam. First, a company would never immediatly ask were to put money, and second, they would definitely sign with their full name and function in the company.

Delete it, it's crap.

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

Ok, so apparently my friend did get her 'contact information.'

This is appearing extremely sophisticated now.:uhm:

He wants to call "her" because he can't find a number to contact for MTV.

Don't know what to do at this point.

dinosaurJR February 24th, 2010 11:45 PM

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

Keep all contact over the telephone - dont email any and I mean ANY personal info to these people...

If this is MTV, then its really badly co ordinated. Hows about just coming out and saying "I think this is a scam" the reaction you get could be the deal breaker...

Oh, of course not.

But I thought it would be a bad idea to even call them.

I mean, could they trace you or something? Of course, what would they do, they probably aren't that desperate for his identity, they'd probably just move on to an easier target.

LOL that should be fun......:naughty:

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

OK....

This is really freaky now.

Dont' know if I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but the person contacting my friend is called "Ashley Benedict," and she is a real person, but I don't know if someone could just be impersonating her.

Here's her IMDB page:

Ashley Benedict

I'm thinking this might actually be legit, would a scammer really keep at it this long?!

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

Most likely yes, a dedicated scammer would do this exactly because these doubts would arise in your head. Look at it this way, if she wanted to do business with you, she would make it her business to dispel any uncertainties

Also, you guys suck at internet:

Hit her up, just dont give any information to her.

That's what I figured.:uhm:

See, the question my friend still has though is how is this stuff really done?

I mean would MTV ever contact anyone for "footage release" like this?

I don't think so, but I don't know what the real process would be, if there is one.

Do you think that Ashley Benedict at IMDB is real or a scammer profile? I think she is just being impersonated by the scammer probably.

Judy McGrath is the CEO of MTV.
Hmm, apparently our training is incomplete.=p

EDIT: I was trying to think how the heck you got that, then I just Googled "MTV contact information." It was the third one down. :p

Thanks!

Metall_pingwin March 3rd, 2010 01:19 PM

Re: Is this legit or a scam?

I think it's very possible they get material that way, but unless your stuff is crazy good, be suspicious. As for the contact info, I actually went about it a circular way by finding out who the CEO is, and then looking up her information. I somehow missed the "MTV Contact Information" google result as well. >_>
