T-Mobile: Missing Sidekick data "almost certainly has been lost"

The Sidekick was one of the first phones to keep all your e-mail, contacts, events, and photos in an online "cloud"; cool, right? But in the wake of a critical server outage more than a week ago, frustrated Sidekick users are learning the hard way that when things go wrong, cloud computing isn't everything it's cracked up to be.

In what's shaping up to be one of the worst tech train wrecks of 2009, T-Mobile and Microsoft (owner of Sidekick developer Danger) admitted Saturday that any contact, events, or to-do lists that haven't already been restored following a massive server meltdown earlier this month are probably gone forever.

That sucks. My wife wanted to get a sidekick. We ended up dumping T-Mobile and going to AT&T. I know alot of people who have them.

So does the sidekick just store all data remotely on the servers then? And they crashed? There was no actual data on the phone itself?

Why would I store on a server something I can store perfectly well locally? It's like paying someone for the privelidge of keeping my food in their freezer.

We've never had any problems with them. Except when we first started they accidentally billed us for services we didn't ask for, so they waved the bill and gave us 3 months of free service plus a good wireless card

Ive been happy with them. I use my iphone alot, and except for the battery not lasting as long as I would like, Im very happy with it. My wife gripes that our bill is now 120 a month instead of 90, but I think its fine. Plus we have AT&T U-Verse DVR and internet. Never had a problem with it. Before I had SBC Yahoo for internet and it would go down every other day. And I had Dish Network DVR and it would go down daily.

Also, what's up with the Provider-exclusive phones? In Belgium and all other European countries except for the UK, you just buy a phone, and you just choose some provider you would like to use.
