A sad end to this special Queensday :( What was meant to be the best Queensday in history, due to it being designated as a special rememberance day in honour of the 100th birthday of the late queen Juliana ended in disaster. I am not sure if this made foreign headlines but today, late morning (11:45?), some crazy guy drove through the cheering crowd of people that welcomed the Queen and royal family. When I heard it I thought it must have been some pissed off guy with a "very short fuse" that got angrivated at the roadblocks around Apeldoorn, as a handfull of people have been known to get into a fight or even drive into police and road " stewards" (officials and volunteers that keep an eye at roadblocks whenever a street is closed for an event such as a march, market, cyclingtour or whatever). Ea, somebody getting pissed because they can't pass (not too often because they can't pass even though it will be an other 15 minutes before the march/tour/.. passes this particular street and they have to wait for "no good reason" ). But apparantly the guy, driving a car and going through the crowd, killing 4 instantly and badly injuring many others (so far one of those died in hospital, setting the fatality count to 5), and into the general direction of the bus with the royal family. The windscreen being completely damaged (shattered and turned "white" due to all the cracks. It came to an abrupt stop crashing into a monument. Apparantly a policeoffiicer who spoke with the badly injured driver seconds after the crash confirmed that the guy said he was attempting to attack the royal family. Not sure what he was trying to establish with just a car (no explosives, no special modications like a steel wireframe to protect the windscreen while plowing through the public, no nothing) since he'd drive into the back of a bus... now if the queen was on foot but... sounds like a pretty piss poor "ill" unproffesional attack. If the police didn't gave the statement the made I'd say this was some guy that got angry at the roadblock and went mental... Anyway, a sad day for a day that was meant to be so special. :( I wonder what securiy measures they will take, I hope not too many since queensday and the royal family always have been meant to be " accesable" , a " relaxed atmosphere" without the need for over the top security that would make things such as a onlooker kissing the queen on the cheek or jumping on the back of the bicycle of a royal family member (the late Prince Claus) impossible. This is just one lunatic, I wouldn't call for tightening the security a lot furhter. The risk ratio has been rather low (acceptable), but it would be up to the royal family. Warning, the following content (news footage) might be upsetting. It shows no blood or core but it shows the "attack" and several casualties laying on the pavement.. :( Spoiler: |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( If I was some sort of monarch or dictator, I wouldn't have some sort of parade where I am exposed to terrorists or assassians. |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( Reports now say that the man (32 years old?),is rumored to recently have been fired from his job and was about to be evicted from his home. Other rumors say he had a career in the security business (which would be ironic, seeing the lunatic, amateuristic attack...). He is in mortal danger, sources within the hospital say that he is braindead... I hope not as this pig needs to stand trial for doing this to those poor people who were having such a great and cheerfull day. Bastard. Apparantly he was sent away from the barricade with his car, but he turned around and drove through it at full speed. With the result being shown in my first post. Quote:
Queensday is a day of celibration. Most people support the royal family, they have little power (we are a democratic country with a parliament and senat, with a minister-president as head of state). The Queensday celebrated the birthday of the Queen (actually the birthday of Beatrix her mother, Juliana, since she herself has her birthday in January and it's too cold for outdoor celebrations then). The day is all about joy, having fun, the queen getting close to the people. She is supposed to be quite accessable to begin with, but especially on this day (like I said: guy kissing the queen, selected people and strangers engaging into planned and spontatious fun acts with members of the royal family etc.). But I suppose doing something like this would be out of the question in most countries (jumping on the back of an enteraining bicycle ride of a member of the royal family or head of state, the late Prince Claus, husband of our Queen). We are supposed to be an easy going and tolerant natin (though the world and we both did change to some extend, but you count change our fundaments, I hope not). This is also why, even with added security over the years the family and our heads of state don't go around showing themsels to the public in bulletproof limosines or " public" speeches with security measurements that costs millions of euro's and have a whole city in complete lockdown. |

Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( @Dr. Awesome, If you dont have anything usefull to say, then dont post. It is a sad day today, hearing those children scream on tv just sends chills down my spine. I hope that the rest of the people who are still heavily injured will be fine. |

Oh wait, judging by the name and sig; I suspect you are one of those dutch ultra-nationalists |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( NOSJOURNAAL - Reconstructie drama Apeldoorn has a reconstruction, see the first video about one minute into the broadcast it shows a red line (the attacker) and an orange line (the royal Orange family). Quote:

Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( That's just horrible. There's so few nations still having a monarchy, so it'd be a shame to see one of them hit. |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( Is it on the Danish news at all? I assume that if it ain't a headline it still is major news... |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( I just checked, and it was reported on the news. It even got the videos you linked. |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( Impatient fucking asshole. I hope he lives so he has to face everybody else. |

And if your basing your opinion of me at the sight of my name and sig, go ahead. My nickname is derived of my brothers nickname and is just nothing more. My sig is just a joke at foreign people of whom all think that Dutch people smoke weed. And Im not a ultra nationalist. If loving my country is nationalist behaviour, then Im a nationalist. But then you can call everybody a nationalist who loves their country. |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( He got a name now, the 38 year old is identified as " Karst T." while other sources claim his full name (which is generally kept hidden but the public usually fins out soon enough anyway) "Richard Karst Tates". I also saw a pictureof the guy with a bloody fronthead and no seatbelts on (I wish he had, it could have reduced his injuries... as it seems the guy is braindead now). |

Why? I guess he needed to get revenge at " the goverment" perhaps, and Queensday being an excellent oppertunity to get his revenge. Perhaps he'd have attacked the minister president if it was during a day were the MP would have done a prominent public thing. Who knows? The guy was desperate, being unemployed and to be evicted from his house (new people would move in the rental house on this Friday). A desperate insane man. It would have made more sense if he'd have attacked his former boss or his landlord for " doing this to him" .. (which also would have been bad ofcourse). :uhm: |

As to your comment about a dictator and never walking out. You'd be inviting getting yourself deposed. A dictator must, even more than a democratically elected government or accepted royalty, reafirm his position amongst the population. Not going out is a sign of weakness and generally some element of the state will move in - the military for instance. Also it's not good to assassinate dictators, you will want them in front of a court in order to legalise your own government. Notice that successful dictators were rarely the in bunker 24/7 type of people. As to the OP. Feels more like the guy was braindead even before his injuries just not literary. Since not many people will think of something like this. |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( Even if the guy had some vendetta against the government or the powers to be, the Dutch royal family, like other European royal families, have been relegated to national symbols rather than a meaningful role in the government. So I don't think he was motivated by that. So looking at this man, as others have stated, he clearly had some issues which were worsened by his job loss. The royal family's procession was the most immediate things he could focus his rage on, that is the royal family, and ends up killing innocent people who wanted nothing more than to just enjoy a good day and see the royal family pass on by. |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( A video reconstruction based on eyewithness reports (as the justice department doens't want to comment on ongoing investigations): NOSJOURNAAL - Animatie van het drama op Koninginnedag Translation of narrator: Quote:
It was running 20 minutes late, a good sign as it indicates the family did kept strictly to the planning and just had fun, it's "expected" from them not to tict too tidely to the scedule. =p |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( What a retard, he didn't even bring explosives. |

Anyway, to the main point of thread. It's too bad to hear about the events of Queensday. Is there any more news about the bastard who did it? I will admit I have not read the second page yet. Lemmeh get on that. :) |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( What a shame. I'd love to see more countries where security is so relaxed that something like that can be done. The US hasn't been able to in 100 years. It's also a shame that we probably won't even see more then a 10 second clip of it in the US since it's not about some celebrity pregnancy or fluffed up report about something that just wastes tax dollars like the congressional investigation about steroid abuse in baseball players. (I wish I was joking.) |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( Are we still having as bad of censors on the news here in America since the office change of Bush to Obama? I have been out of touch on stuff like that for a while, due to having an 18 credit semester of college and having no time to stay up on news. Now it's summer and I'm trying to get back up to speed on things. Have they made our news and media a little less censored or bullshitted to hell? |

I tried in the past, but within a few minutes I went "ugh, they call this news? It looks like a bloody gossip show added with some drama, a lost reporter wandering in and topped with tons of flashing lights and things which may have been meant to attract my attention but just totally threw me off, made me sick and swapped to the Dutch Public (News) Broadcasting and/or BBC ASAP. I was like "what happend to the single news reporter with a screen next to him, a tape is rolled, news guy introduces next topic, tape is rolled, repeat, other dude shows the weather, then first guy wishes the audience a good evening, end (about 20-25 minutes in all). Seriously: Studio with guy+desk+screen and reporters that tape some event and discribe what happend without resorting to paddeling a boat in 2 centimeter deep water for added drama. That's all you need. Oh and make it state funded so they don't have to care too much if on a certain evening either 10 or 10 million people are watching... Edit: Does www.journaal24.nl work for you people? It shows the latest news NOS (Dutch public news agency) broadcast (they air a new bullentin every (few) hours roughly speaking. Just for those who are curious (and are fluent in Dutch and various other nations, we don't dub when foreigners are on screen =p ) . Note that this is an digital broascasted which has the added (silly) newsbanner which isn't there in normal broadcastings. If you wathc now you get to see the coverage of Liberation Day. :) |
Re: A sad end to this special Queensday :( Didn't know such a day existed. Thanks for the violent videos. |
