Well I don't think Libya's flag necessarily ugly... just uninspired and bland.

The flag of the South Yemen republic (1967-1990). The use of neon blue is cruddy.

Cote d'Ivoire's flag consists of three bands: orange, white, and green. Ireland's flag consists of three bands: green, white, and orange.

Oman, the use of red in two intersecting bands really isn't so good

Nah, it makes sense. Usually when people draw up a flag it has to be something people can relate to and recongize. If they'd have drawn up something "random" people would have had a lot harder time recognising what it stands for and thus accepting it.

Yes the look a like, but I remember it has something to do with the monarchies of the "low countries" (when The Netherlands and Belium formed one "country", Luxemburg belonged to the Netherlands aswell).

Luxemburg became independant from the Netherlands in 1890 because their was no male heir to the throne. Their flag is not based on the Dutch flag however but on the coat of arms of the country.

The flag for the BeNeLux (Belgium Netherlands Luxembourg aka the low countries though techincally that's only Belgium plus Netherlands) also looks simular:

^ The top banner is orange since the Dutch flag used to be orange (well technically that flag was not the Dutch flag but the "prince flag" which was adopted as the official flag for the "Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden" or the "Republic of seven united Netherlands" ), it then turned red for some reason. But only just before the second world war, 1937, was it made defentive by the Queen (Wilhemina), that the colour should be red and not orange.
