Dear lord, yes, change the name back to Gaming Forums.

And, no- I don't hold a grudge against Ziffy for shutting down the site- they probably had to. I do, however, think it could've been done a lot smoother, and more professional. Nor do I hold a grudge against the mass of people who came to TRF because they "had" to, and will never come back. In FF's time of need, we did what we could to keep the majority of the community together and informed, and have no regrets about it, even though no one has yet to even thank us. Tis all good.

Here's to a new future for GF!

No grudge against Ziff Davis, but a little advance warning would have been nice. A return to the GamingForums name would be nice, but we would lose the ability to tell newbies "Y'know, back in my day, we were called GamingForums, plain and simple! We had to walk uphill both ways 5 miles over a dirt road to get our bandwidth for the day, and if we spilled any from the bucket, n0e and AzH would cut switches from the yard and beat us in the britches!"

Finally people are begining to see the difference between FF and ZD. Over the last year or so alot of members have been quick to place the blame of all the 'bad' things that have happened to the forums on FF when, in fact, the decisions have been made above FF.
Perhaps now members will finally see beyond 'corporatisation'.

Happy days indeed!

And grats to the Founders for buying back FileFront and Gaming Forums. :D

Three men enter. Two girls leave.

As for the other forums mentioned by AzH: yeah, that's kinda what happens. I think GamingForums will continue to be my main forum, but that doesn't mean that TheRogueForums won't continue to be visited (BTW, what's your forum called now? I know that a little bird registered there, but I think I haven't signed in yet.)

I doubt the game-specific forums are likely to change much if at all, and now that the evil overlords are out of the picture and the founders have returned home I would imagine that the FilesNetwork as a whole may even get some much-needed attention at long last. Y'never know.

Then don't.

I've been lurking about different forums and see the same thing pop up over and over again "I can't go back to FF, not after what they put me through", and it just... Well it grinds my gears.

The situation so far is as follows: Last year, Ziff Davis filed for bankruptcy, and the Network has slowly seen a decline in traffic. Just last week, Ziff Davis Media decided to pull the plug on both the Files Network and Gaming Forums, the latter going first and without any warning. As announcments were finally put up on the Network, many of the forum regulars retreated to other places, eagerly awaiting some word on the situation from people who know what is going on.

A few days into the whole debacle, Jeff "n0e" Mills (who mind you, was laid off in the process) finally managed to get some official word on the situation and asked everybody to stay vigilant. A master plan was brewing, while many of us were busy backing up as many files as possible from the network.

March 30th, n0e teamed up with StrategyInformer in order to launch the spiritual sucessor of Gaming Forums, and the Files Network. Within the first five hours of launch, the forum saw an incredible flood of FileFront refugees. Old staff was brought back, and spam threads resurected.

March 31st, A thread is posted on StrategyInformer hotlinking to the forums. Although the main page does not work, everybody has access to the "General Chit-Chat" section. Within minutes, confusion and spamming begin.
Jeff "n0e" Mills brings the first official word on the forums. Although he himself knows little, the forums are supposed to come back.

April 1st, The official announcement is made. FileFront has been purchased from Ziff Davis by some of it's original owners. The two entities are now completely separate, and the lookout is positive. The goal: Bring GF back to it's pre-corporate days.

On the brink of destruction, FileFront has been saved in the last minute by people who legitimately care for the community and had nothing to do with it's closure. All complaints and revenge notes should be directed towards Ziff Davis Media - Ziff Davis Publishing - Corporate Information

tl;dr: Not a joke, Bat people out, good people in.

:gpost:Well said mate, i am glad someone explained the situation comprehensively for anyone that is still confused by the recent events. I think perhaps this thread should be made a sticky or something.

So if your hurt beacuse a fourm and the networks went down hummm doesn't that mean you usally don't have a life? AS far as I'm concered it's only a fourm and mods.

Yet I'll still give my time to the Network, but hold a grudge no I wasn't hurted nor killed by this.

Define "life"? I'd define it as something sentient, and capable of performing tasks. If you're angry because that a means of communications get closed, and it means you don't have a life, you wouldn't be able to be angry in the first place.

I have no grudge against Filefront because they did nothing but rebuild. Ziff Davis was the idiot that was responsible for locking us out without notice, and the management was responsible for bringing it back together.

Chastise Ziff Davis, not Filefront.

The original founders are long dead, but it's the way the whole corporation is run. To begin with, they still have 1Up as part of their company on their website.

Nothing legally. He just pissed everyone off by closing the forums down without notifying anyone (except n0e, who had a 15-minute notice). It's like going to work, finding the front door locked, and then finding a note on the door that reads "We're closed forever."

Imagine how much worse it affected the paid staff. I hope you find jobs or are getting paid again by SI.

No again you taken what I have said and turned into an insult. Okay let'me pick it to you this way again. The OP said that people form FF where going around posting on differnet fourms and blah blah sayin this and I quote " "I can't go back to FF, not after what they put me through" that tells me these people have no life, who are hurt beacuse a fourm is gone/returned! No reason to hold a grudge against filefront. Thats like your step parents threatening to take away a toy, and then at the last second, your grandparents swoop in and get it for you. Why would you then hate the toy?

Well, thankyou Redm ad Cyclotron. I understand now, although I had to ask Admiral_Donutz who "the founders" are.

I find this kind of thing interesting. Why did you not put up profiles of yourself in the announcement ? It would have made it look much more legit. This entire Ziff Davis / April 1st / we're closed - now we're open episode looks like a <insert name for con> scam intended to increase publicity - a bit like those "closing down sales" that shops have. Hence the suspicion in some quarters, and from me. I made some conspirational sounding posts on BFSP which I will *refute* now ... but they made sense initially.

Desite my sig I will probably be around here for other games. The speed with which the community started rebuilding was startling . Maybe FF could make links with those places and have a sticky, or links page ?

Cyclocide* ;)

I think the reason they didn't is only a handful would actually remember them. They want to get the point across stating that the ones that started filefront were coming back over individuals doing it. If that makes any sense. (I'm guessing, I suck at guessing quite a bit)

I am glad to see you're sticking around to show your support. :) Just wait until you see what other ideas we have and roll out with them. I doubt anyone here will not be pleased with their results.

DJBarney April 8th, 2009 09:22 AM

Re: Do you hold a grudge against FileFront?

Oops. Yes, Cyclocide .

Well, they might not be known but it would have added a lot more legitimacy at the time with the rumours flying around and April 1st involved as well.

How about the links to other community sites and forums ? That would give two way traffic if the site on the end put's up a FF logo.

Re: Do you hold a grudge against FileFront?

Ziff Davis.

People need to get over the hate. Ziff Davis bankrolled these forums for a long time and they only got rid of File Front because it was an unprofitable business to run. My best wishes go to Derek & Co.. Lets hope business picks up in this time of economic downturn.

The members here are in it for the memories, the business is in it for the business.

Good luck to all.
