Is this true do you think ...? Facts from the 1500's England is old and small and they started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, one out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the "graveyard shift") to listen for the bell. Thus, someone could be saved by the bell" or was considered a "dead ringer". spooky ! |
Yeah, I've heard that before. I just always thought it was a kind of Urban Legend. Mike. ------------------ Pround owner of a 1997 Eagle Talon ESi "The hump on my hood? I'm happy to see you. Click Here for a Picture. |

It's true that some people have been buried alive. Some people have even been saved at the last minute. I think it was a lot more common before we had professional doctors though. It'd be a horrific way to go. |

Alot of it makes sense, The graveyard shift? Dead ringer? Saved by the bell? Hope it isn't true http://www.veforums.com/wink.gif I don't think we have to worry, everything they put you through nowadays they make sure you won't be ringing any bells http://www.veforums.com/wink.gif |
Probably just some prank some little hoodlums pulled. |
Yes, at one time it was a fact that some people were indeed burried alive! Back then if no pulse or breath was detected, you were considered dead. Before embalming, burial was quick and the ocasional live burials were the result. There are stories of bodies being exhumed to expose the grusome evidence of people with bloody, fingers, worn to the bone from trying to claw their way out. However, the graves with the bells were almost exclusivly the luxury of the paranoid rich. |
