Yes, at one time it was a fact that some people were indeed burried alive! Back then if no pulse or breath was detected, you were considered dead. Before embalming, burial was quick and the ocasional live burials were the result.

There are stories of bodies being exhumed to expose the grusome evidence of people with bloody, fingers, worn to the bone from trying to claw their way out.

However, the graves with the bells were almost exclusivly the luxury of the paranoid rich.
