You want weird news? Try this on for size...

Spoiler:
Scientists develop tobacco plant which turns red when it detects landmines | Mail Online :Puzzled:
Quote:

A plant that can detect landmines has been developed by scientists.

The genetically-modified tobacco plant has a gene that triggers a red plant pigment found in tomatoes and apples.

When the roots detect nitrogen oxide which leaks from landmines, the green leaves turn red about ten weeks.

Well...I guess its useful.

Very useful, there's huge swathes of the world covered in landmines. I suppose it could also be a good way to recoup some of the cost of mine-clearing procedures, once you've cleared the field, you can sell the tobacco.

That's just gruesome. This gets points for interestingness and originality.

And kill them slowly instead? ;)

Old news. Danish researchers began working on it 4½ years ago.

Exactly, reborn. And make some money too! No one gets any funds from a landmine death. Using tobacco to kill is good for the economy!

And it lowers the overburgeoning population in African nations, what heroes!

If only they could make condoms out of tobacco, then the AIDS epidemic would be solved too!

Wow... That means if i put it on my lap and it glows red, i'm pretty screwed?

Not as wierd as last year when they managed to clone rabbits... Except they glowed in the dark.

They've been making glowing fish for awhile now.
GloFish® Fluorescent Fish Photos
I've even made glowing E. coli in my AP biology class.

Just had a funny thought, what if someone misunderstood this thinking all it would take to detect land mines was to walk through them with a lit cigarette? Kaboom!!!

Seriously though, it would have to be a God awful plant like tobacco that's found to be useful for this. Just when you think the world is getting smart to the ills of the plant something like this comes along.

It's not the plants fault, and it's not the plant killing people. It's the people processing and draining it.

The plant itself isn't dangerous, it's those darn people draining it. Then again, they say "Guns don't kill people". But people kill guns then?

It takes 10 weeks for the leaves to turn red, plus growing time... you could probably clear the field in that time without a paddock of plants in your way.

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

If you'll recall, the article points out mechanical clearing doesn't always get them all. That's why the plants are developed. Also, let me repeat, tobacco is a cash crop, potentially making money for impoverished nations while also helping to clear their land of mines. I might not like tobacco, but it can make money.

Encouragement of cash crops puts farmers at greater risk of international price changes, and contributes to the global food shortage ;)

This is much less effective than mechanical clearing because it only works for leaking mines.

Crazy Wolf July 31st, 2008 10:07 PM

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

Yes, it does, but I'm not suggesting it be a permanent crop, marsoe. I'm suggesting that when life gives you lemons (or, y'know, mine-detecting tobacco), you make lemonade (use the tobacco to make yourself a bit of money to recoup the cost of planting).
RE the plant's efficacy: It gets the mines that mechanical clearing doesn't find. Besides, mines aren't exactly kept in the best condition/manufactured to the strictest specifications. I'd bet that it can detect a fair number of mines.

Last I checked, the plant was oversensitive, I'm confident flawed mines would be picked up.

So who's gonna volunteer to walk out into the minefield and plant the tobacco?

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

I volunteer for this task as long as I get plenty of tobaccy for smoking, you need to be smoking something to walk into a minefield and plant them.

That's exactly what I was thinking, how the heck is someone supposed to plant tobacco without accidentally blowing themselves up?

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

The tobacco could be spread via air, or planted at the perimeter of a suspected minefield and then allowed to grow in by natural methods.

As long as they're aware, there's not alot of danger. They just need to stay out of newly dug earth. Better question; How exactly are they going to find the minefield? Isn't it too late when they have found it?

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

It's too late for the first person/cow/vehicle. It isn't too late for everyone else.

Interesting (even if it's old news, I never heard of it before) thugh why a tabacco plant??

Crazy Wolf August 2nd, 2008 01:33 PM

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

Tobacco is a big plant, so it is visible from afar, it grows well, and it is fairly hardy.

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

Hmm but aren't there better candidates out there? Plants that grow like freaking weed in large numbers, in many climates etc. and which aren't too hard to kill off (or perhaps not too dominating over other vegetation and things). I'm not a plant expert but I would simply guess that other plants miight score better then a tabacco plant. Or it might have been the best plant for the job, but it's not really explained. A quote on the pro's and con's of using this plant would have been interesting.

Re: You want weird news? Try this on for size...

Well, I'm no botanist, but it grows fast, not too many things eat it, it is pretty hardy, it is big enough to be able to tell the color from a distance.

Here's a quote:

Because the weed is too small to be seen from a safe distance, the scientists went looking for a more viable alternative, and landed on the tobacco plant, which grows easily in most parts of the world, with a little help from genetic engineering.
