I don't drink that much soda, so... i usually end up drinking whatever somebody offers me, or whatever is cheap/on-sale at the time.

Mountain Dew or Orange Soda.

But Gamefuel. That was probably the best soda I ever had. Ever. It tasted the best, it a great amount of caffeine. It's a shame they stopped producing it. Although I have faith that they will bring it back without Chiefs face on it.

I also had a brief stint with Jolt Cola. That was good stuff.

Pepsi then Coke. I like an assortment of sodas though, but those two rank above the rest.

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

Pepsi cola.

Oh and I always have to laugh at people who drink light soda (americans tend to call it diet soda though?) because they are on a diet to lose weight. Drinking light products or other special versions of a product due to an allergy or something is all good. But if you want to lose weight, don't drink soda, drink water or something like that... :uhm: Same for people who buy light/diet chips and such while they are at it and then wonder why they don't really lose any weight... Not to mention that most light products taste like crap.

Benzin May 18th, 2008 07:13 AM

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

No, diet soda is just normal soda with no sugar, which can help people who can't metabolise sugar well, and tend to go hyper. So your argument is void.

Admiral Donutz May 18th, 2008 07:17 AM

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

hence why I wrote "Drinking light products or other special versions of a product due to an allergy or something is all good." If you can't lay off the sugar due to medical reasons it's okay. Though even then you would probaby be better of staying away from soda and other sugar products all together. But for those who use diet products while on a diet to lose weight...

Root beer is best for taste, though I go for Mountain Dew as the classic gamer fuel.

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

My favorite is probably Kinnie, an obscure Maltese soft drink with a slightly bitter orange peel flavor.
Since it isn't regularly sold outside of Malta, I'll go with Tonic.

There's been research done that shows that your body responds to the sweet taste of diet drinks in the same way that it does to a drink that actually has sugar in it. I can't remember exactly how it works, but the result is that you actually gain weight. Granted, we're not talking about much and possibly less than if you drank a normal sugary drink, but still....irony anyone?

SiLink May 19th, 2008 05:38 AM

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

Probably 7up ^^ it used to be Tizer but for some reason that just tastes awful now.

Bs|Archaon May 19th, 2008 05:57 AM

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

They changed the Tizer recipe recently. I believe they changed it to make it closer to the original recipe, but for people like us who were brought up with the "old" Tizer (the one with the head branding, 'itzred' etc) it's completely different to the Tizer we've always had. I don't like the "new" one either.

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

Soda is something most people ignore, it's just part of their lives. You should read the nutritional label on all products. Shit, I was just thirsty last night [left my gallon jug of water in the car, was too lazy to go and get it] and I picked up a Sprite, it has 35 g sugar. My god.]

I've heard the same, it somehow activates hormones that make the body put on more fat. So the "light" is quite misleading.

In actual fact, I believe artificial sweeteners themselves do not cause weight gain (what I mean is, they alone aren't responsible for adding additional calories to the body like you would get from sugar), just the effects they can have on the body. I think the way it works is if you consume artificial sweeteners, the body naturally responds to their sweet taste by secreting insulin. Rather than receiving sugar in the blood as expected, it receives a combination of protein compounds. Doing its normal job, the pancreas has already prepared a portion of insulin that now 'floats' about in the bloodstream searching for the expected sugar. Since it isn't found there, I believe the insulin removes some of the blood sugar instead. This effectively lowers your sugar levels. Since this situation can be life-endangering, your body quickly signals "hunger" which becomes a sudden, strong "craving". Since foods with artificial sweeteners are not able to meet the demand for an increase in blood sugar, many people begin to look for sugary foods.

Instead of saving the calories that are contained in ordinary sugar, you have artificially increased your need and appetite for more sweet food. If you try to satisfy this desire by eating more foods containing artificial sweeteners (without calories), the urge to eat will theoretically become even stronger than before and you will start overeating, hence making you gain weight. It does make sense in a way, but I personally don't like to eat sugary "processed" foods and never crave them--even if I've consumed a diet soft-drink with artificial sweeteners.

Re: Your Favorite Type Of Soda?

Soda/Pop doesn't hold any appeal for me anymore. That happened slightly after I went to school and had constant access to the fountain. It took about a week to figure out that it made me feel terrible. Now I only drink it if I don't have a choice, and if I WAS going to drink it, I'd probably Cherry Vanilla Coke.

That sounds about right yeah. The difference with you is that if you don't like sweet drinks ('diet' or otherwise), you won't get the constant insulin spikes that someone who constantly drinks them will suffer from. Even if it does cause your body to produce more insulin, I doubt that it has much of an effect on a one-off basis. If you drink lots of sweet drinks throughout the day like a lot of people do (me included I'm afraid) then it's a different kettle of fish entirely.

Agreed ^. It's really not that complicated.
