Soda is something most people ignore, it's just part of their lives. You should read the nutritional label on all products. Shit, I was just thirsty last night [left my gallon jug of water in the car, was too lazy to go and get it] and I picked up a Sprite, it has 35 g sugar. My god.]

I can't remember exactly how it works, but the result is that you actually gain weight. Granted, we're not talking about much and possibly less than if you drank a normal sugary drink, but still....irony anyone?

I've heard the same, it somehow activates hormones that make the body put on more fat. So the "light" is quite misleading.

In actual fact, I believe artificial sweeteners themselves do not cause weight gain (what I mean is, they alone aren't responsible for adding additional calories to the body like you would get from sugar), just the effects they can have on the body. I think the way it works is if you consume artificial sweeteners, the body naturally responds to their sweet taste by secreting insulin. Rather than receiving sugar in the blood as expected, it receives a combination of protein compounds. Doing its normal job, the pancreas has already prepared a portion of insulin that now 'floats' about in the bloodstream searching for the expected sugar. Since it isn't found there, I believe the insulin removes some of the blood sugar instead. This effectively lowers your sugar levels. Since this situation can be life-endangering, your body quickly signals "hunger" which becomes a sudden, strong "craving". Since foods with artificial sweeteners are not able to meet the demand for an increase in blood sugar, many people begin to look for sugary foods.

Instead of saving the calories that are contained in ordinary sugar, you have artificially increased your need and appetite for more sweet food. If you try to satisfy this desire by eating more foods containing artificial sweeteners (without calories), the urge to eat will theoretically become even stronger than before and you will start overeating, hence making you gain weight. It does make sense in a way, but I personally don't like to eat sugary "processed" foods and never crave them--even if I've consumed a diet soft-drink with artificial sweeteners.

Soda/Pop doesn't hold any appeal for me anymore. That happened slightly after I went to school and had constant access to the fountain. It took about a week to figure out that it made me feel terrible. Now I only drink it if I don't have a choice, and if I WAS going to drink it, I'd probably Cherry Vanilla Coke.

My usual go to drink would be Pepsi. Sunkist comes in 2nd.

The drink of FIRST robotics and gamers everywhere, Mountain Dew.

However I'm trying to cut back on my pop intake a little bit at least.

That sounds about right yeah. The difference with you is that if you don't like sweet drinks ('diet' or otherwise), you won't get the constant insulin spikes that someone who constantly drinks them will suffer from. Even if it does cause your body to produce more insulin, I doubt that it has much of an effect on a one-off basis. If you drink lots of sweet drinks throughout the day like a lot of people do (me included I'm afraid) then it's a different kettle of fish entirely.

Agreed ^. It's really not that complicated.

I guess if I had to have a favorite, it's be root beer, it's freaking rich with sugars.
