Meaning of your name?

Do you know the roots or the meaning of your actual, real life name (first name)? I found out some pretty neat stuff about mine via Wiki. Apparently Irish used to have a goddess going by my name, a protector of crows and ravens and a goddess of violent death. One of old cults also had a nymph with the same name, a "daughter of the lake". In more recent time, sometimes it's known to mean "Merciful".
How about you, do you know what your name means? Might find out interesting things.

Re: Meaning of your name?

According to the beaten-down name-book that my parents used to name me, mine just means something amorphous like "happy" or "great" or something. My last name is pretty general as well -- it just means something along the lines of "by the rocky shore."

So yeah. My names are kind of meaningless. And common. But thats ok, you can't actually find me on Google unless you know my full name and a little of my background. And even then its just sports information from my college.

Re: Meaning of your name?

I've known what mine meant since I was born, It means John or John means mine. The exact translation means 'God's Gift' but I think I'm gonna see what wiki has to say 'bout my name.

Re: Meaning of your name?

My First name, I know this because I've looked it up, means "The Lord Remembers." or "God has remembered."

Marino is Sicilian, I have no evidence that it means this, but the my limited knowledge of my own language and the fact that my grandparents used to leave near the sea, I would assume it means "Marine" or something closely related in the local dialect.

"The Lord Remembers (the) Marine(s)."

"God has remembered (the) Marine(rs)."

Re: Meaning of your name?

Marino is a male version of Marina, which means "of the sea". It's a very nice name.

Mine means "judged by God", which is very ironic, seeing I don't believe in a God.

Marina is a very common name in Croatia, as well as Marino.
Speer, is your name as common as John?

Thats always something I've thought interesting -- most of the things in life, you can choose yourself: what to wear, who to hang out with, how to act (to a certain extent), etc etc... But one of the most fundamental things about yourself -- your name -- you have absolutely no control over. I mean, true, theres always the legal name change, but that isn't your actual name name, if you know what I'm saying.

But yeah. Just my random pseudo-philosophical thought for the day.

Even if you weren't that good I would vote for you anyway, the only person I know that is on the 'award choice' thing.

"Bitter"? Which one is that? Did your parents know that when they picked it out, or did they just think it sounded cool?

It means exactly the same as spear in English. It can describe a throwable spear (javelin) as well as an infantry spear.

A good site by the way: Behind the Name - the Etymology and History of First Names

My name is Riku, which is a Finnish form of Richard (means "brave power", derived from the Germanic elements ric "power, rule" and hard "brave, hardy")

or Greek Gregory (watchful, alert) as a book of Finnish first name etymologies suggested it might be either Richard or Gregory. Riku is still quite different so I don't think it matters that much. :) I quite like my name, if you can say so :D

Wiki is a good site, just don't list it as a source (when doing a paper, etc) because some people believe that it is unreliable, because anyone can edit it...

Re: Meaning of your name?

My name is a variant of Seth/Set. Which has an Egyptian and a Biblical meaning.

Egyptian: from Σεθως (Sethos), the Greek form of Egyptian Sutekh or Set, which possibly meant "pillar" or "dazzle". Seth was the evil Egyptian god of chaos and the desert, the slayer of Osiris. Orisis' son Horus eventually defeats Set and has him banished to the desert.

Biblical: means "placed" or "appointed" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament he was the third son of Adam and Eve, and forefather of the entire human race.
