Possibly derived from Hebrew דוד (dvd) meaning "beloved". David was the second and greatest of the kings of Israel, ruling in the 10th century BC. Several stories about him are told in the Old Testament, including his defeat of Goliath, a giant Philistine. And no, it's more of a lineage thing. My dad wanted me to have a French middle name, and my mom's middle name was French, so he chose that one. My mother wanted my middle name to be Ann, thus Ann(e)-Marie was conceived.

Hm, interesting. My name is Ana. (spelled like that) Not many people know how to pronounce it correctly, though, so I settled with having it pronounced as Anna. I still find it somewhat funny that it means Merciful.

I do have a version of middle name, though...it's not as official as middle name in Western countries. It's Vesna, it means "messenger" and it's also a name of Slavic goddess of spring.
