Default Warning: Phishing Sites

Hey all.

It seems there's phishers coming back around here to honor us with a visit. The latest was a guy named "Smartguy112". If you've received a link from him which took you to a page where you had to enter your password, change it right away. This site is bogus.

Tips to avoid being caught by phishers:

1) Always double-check the URL if you've received a link.
2) If something doesn't look right, it's quite possible it's not right.
3) Normally, if you're being linked to a public forum (Pub, General Discussion), you will never be asked for your password. It's viewable for guests too.
4) If you get caught, change your password ASAP.

If you get a PM from someone to a phishing site, please make sure you report it to either an admin or supermod. If you see a post, please report it to a mod of the forum (or a supermod/admin) with the report a post button (), or via MSN/IRC if the mod is online. Do not repost the link you've been given, as it might fool someone if a long-term member posts it.

That's pretty much it, I guess. Carry on.

Phishing is when a hacker or some asshole who knows how to get into someones computer and takes personal info. But these sites I think want info about your login on here and some other personal info. Thats why people have firewalls, scam alerts, and some other protection programs.

Oh....and sorry to all the members who have posted in this thread and probably didn't want to see this thread in their User CP ever again.

Not really.

Phishing is taking online information through a real-looking, but fake, communication. Lots of bank scams use phishing, you get an email supposedly from your bank with a "just enter your account number and PIN and we'll reconfirm your details". See Phishing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In that case, a guy sent out PMs with a redirect link to a site that (rather crudely) looked like Filefront. You were prompted to enter your username and password (hur hur) to see the "thread".

Free Spyware Removal | CyberDefender Internet Security: free virus scan and spy ware download Its free (but missing some premium stuff that you can live without). Its a good program. I've used it for about 2 years now.

I cannot grasp why anyone would want to phish data with which no money can be made.

Bank account data - yes, but FileFront user data? Why? *sigh*

Well, if they caught an Admin, then,...

Its probably just some punk trying to cause trouble. Probably got himself/herself banned from the forums.
