Trust me, at college you're gonna like the extra work you can do...

(Last 2 days 10 hours of doing math exercises prove it) Yea exams session comming soon.

Re: homework

For the most part I don't have a problem with it. I only complain when I'm forced to use only one side of a sheet of paper. Teachers must own a lot of lumber and school supply stocks. :uhm:

On a serious note, it does help with with the learning process. Eliminating it wouldn't be a good idea.

Re: homework

I don't mind homework when they really help. I dispise useless, very long, homeworks that count on the final mark however, some teachers are professionals at making those (such as the geography teacher I had last year, she gave us works that took 3 hours to make every class, and that were completely irrevelent to the exams or class).

Still, homeworks that relate to the class and can help preparing for exams can be key to success. I wouldn't say I love them, because I'm lazy, but they are a necessary evil.

Re: homework

Depends what it is. If it's a Lab Report, it's Tedious, but necassary. Generally if it's Math, I'll do it, because it turns out I am quite good in math. Top of my Class, same with Science. I love writing Essays, becuase I like to write and express my opinions, and generally I get very good scores on them. My essay for the Test last year was the highest in the school.

However, if it's long, tedious, and essentially useless, such as about 50% of our Math Work, I won't bother with it, I'll do it during school.

I find it necassary in some cases, lacking in others.

Re: homework

Basically, here's my philosiphy

The concept behind homework is good, helps reinforce the ideas that you learned. Problem? Teachers give way too much homework!!!! Or at least in my school, i get completely overwhelmed every single night of the year.

The absolute, bar none, biggest problem i have is homework over breaks. It is the worst thign wrong with the school system here in America. Summer homework the worst of all. I mean, i work my ass off every God forsaken day, and i get a week off to RELAX and not have to worry about school! But no!!! i had to write a 10 page paper for history last year, and this year i get to write a 15 page research paper over christmas break, along with a Macbeth paper. How do i know this? I asked the teachers what we have over break.

But yeah, i don't think my mind has been "free" of school since i started high school. Every night i have hw on my mind, every break i have a big project on my mind, and *especially* this past summer, i get LOADED with homework and ruins my summer.

Example: i'll type up my homework from last night

english: Macbeth Act II project DUE TOMORROW
calculus: study for CHAPTER 8 test friday
pg. 152 #1 - 19 ALL
history: write DBQ based on in class question (DBQ = Document Based Question = Essay .... )
chemistry: Study for chapter 5, 6 & 7 test friday
Pg. 201 #11-49 odd

^this is typical, you wouldn't believe what a bad night looks like.

Being long out of school years, I will tell you a lot of the reason for homework.iIs when you get past school and into plane o life, it teaches you to get all your crap done each day.
wash, lawn, and or just any chore, job, work instead of doing things on the fly all the time and feeling overwhelmed, then things crop up, bills dont get paid and so on.

damn straight attendance and homework saved my ass in math last semester and hopefully the same thing will occur in biology. If you don't plan or rather can't get stellar grades on tests and major assignments any homework or extra credit will help greatly.

Re: homework

I hate homework. Fucking busywork is ridiculous and doesnt help me learn at all. I like reading the text, but worksheets are foolish.

Re: homework

Most of the time I don't have any problems with homework. Sometimes it can "even" be a lot of fun. It all depends in the assignment.

Rarely did I got any homework I hated. On college most of the homework are groupprojects and they are often a lot of fun though stressfull with the deadlines.

I voted "It's ok" for this reason, generally it's fine or a lot of fun but sometimes it's annoying.

PS: Don't think there is a lot to discuss about what people think of homework, a discussion would be "Do you think homework should be banned or should all work be done at home instead?" or something like that. Nice topic but I think it fits better in the GD. :moved:

Edit: Oh and summer homework  Summer vacation is generally seen as a large (the largest) break, the closure of an old study year and preparing for a new one. No homework in such a period. I'm I glad we don't have that. :)

Re: homework

It's helpful to have, but it would be better if ther was more communication between teachers about when it's set. Like not setting me maths homework for the next day when I'm supposed to be revising for important tests that will happen the next day as well. (hope that made sense!)

Homework sucks but unless you're very intelligent (in which case doing homework is easy anyway) you do need to do it.

I see what your saying but surely the chores parents should give covers that? anyway homework I hate it but in some cases it is necessary but they do give to much I have hardly any social lfe because off homework, for instance today i have done a systems report, an english essay and a history essay now in total that took 4 hours, i get home at 4 so that took me till 8 meaning i have no time to go out with my friends, homework may be essential but at that ammount its too much.

Re: homework

Home isn't that bad, it's only bad when you really want to do something else, but the homework needs to be done. But at the end of the day you have to do it(well at my school)or you get punished.

guess you better get crackin. but yeah, homework can be helpful, but often times, it is overkill. and if you notice, the young teachers dont give much homework, probably because they remember how much they hated it, wheras the older teachers dont remember how bad it was.

I freaking love essays. They are my favorite. :)

I also enjoy math homework, the numbers never bore me. I am especially a fan of matrix maths.

You hit the nail on the head. I learn pretty well from schoolwork myself. Yet, I dont want HW.

Re: homework

I hate the stuff. In chem, I only need a few problems to get ahold of it. My teacher piles on about 50 problems a week. She says she will collect them, but she never does. Then at random she says I have a D becuase I did not turn in one assingment.

Becuase I am spending a good bit of time on busy work, I never do any of my optional homework for pre-calc. Becuase of that, I don't know what I am doing in pre-calc.

Now reading a book in 2 weeks and filling out a study guide for my AP-lit class is fine. I put in about 10 hours, and I get 120 points for a study guide.

Nemmerle December 9th, 2006 06:27 AM

Re: homework

Most of the homework that teachers assign doesn't help worth Jack.
'Go away and make a presentation on this.'
Alrighty, you look in the book, type it into PowerPoint or whatever, don't really understand it and then spew it all out in class again.
Or 'read this chapter and answer questions' fair enough, read through the chapter answer the questions and by next week it will be gone from your mind again.

That sort of homework isn't worth anything.
Then there's the other kind.

'I'm a good little parrot, parrot, parrot.'
You see subjects at school have a basic premise, even in things like Physics and Maths: here's the sequence/study to memorise, then repeat it back to me in the exam.
So the other kind of homework, most often the stuff that teachers don't assign you but anyone who wants to do well will do on their own, consists of sitting at home with a dictaphone and the book repeating the same thing by rote until it can be recalled perfectly.

I can quote studies from memory in all of my subjects
Quote:

Walster and Walster, 1969, repeat study of the computer dance. In 1969 Walster and Walster performed a repeat study of the computer dance with the exception that the participants were allowed to meet beforehand. This time the findings of their study were in line with the matching hypothesis in that those with partners of like attractiveness had the best time at the dance. This may have been due to the participants having had more time to contemplate the values they would like in their partners.
Really teaching needs to go back to parrot fashion work, it's what's relevant to the exams.

What's homework worth? Well most of it isn't worth diddly. The stuff you do yourself will help to memorise stuff by rote and repetition, and it will get you through the exams with fantastic grades from which perspective it's worth a lot but it won't make you any smarter.
