Probably more than just the rifling, if you look along the barrel you can see pieces of rust protruding from the edges.

I asked a friend who understands more about old guns than me, his opinion was that the gun is beyond repair.

edit: Do you know a company called Taurus? It seems to produce look-a-likes of Smith&Wesson revolvers, I wondered if they catch a good price.

Hmm. Rust is tricky. Sometimes it can be just copper fouling, or possibly as your friend said, the whole thing is bad. One of my Nagants had what looked like rust in the bore (I hate Nagant bores. It is an extreme pain to make sure everything is cleaned) and the majority of it just happened to be fouling.

Yes, I know Taurus. They are a Brazilian based company, but also have a U.S.A. branch, that mimic a lot of popular handguns, from revolvers to semiautomatics. They are mainly known for their Raging Bull series. The price varies of course, but a revolver going for between $300-500 wouldn't surprise me.

Re: Firearms Discussion Thread... For all you Gun Lovers.

The guns are sadly stored in a locker which doesn't have a very good climate (a bit too wet I guess). Well, I'll have to buy a new locker or sell the guns anyway soon as there is a new legislation for weapons-storage.

This legislation also causes the value of most weapons to sink a lot right now, so I guess I'll better invest in a new locker.

Maybe I'll have to sell some of those guns in the US if you get so much money there, but it'll probably be rather difficult to export a weapon into another country with the strict German legislation.

Re: Firearms Discussion Thread... For all you Gun Lovers.

If you pay more than 150 dollars for a rebuilt K98 with mismatched parts you're a fool. History is one thing but as Col. Cooper states, only accurate rifles are interesting. I agree that drilling and tapping a museum quality piece is retarded but if all you want is a cheap shooting rifle then by all means bubba-tize a broke dick 98 or Mosin. They ARENT worth much because whether or not you find the history of them cool, they still made millions upon millions of the bastards that are in fairly decent shape and widely available. If i hadnt just TDY'd here to Mississippi I would show you my local gun shop in SC that sells rebuilt K98's for 100 a pop (up to 300 for the unissued or lightly used ones) and 80 bucks for Mosins in ANY shape.

For example, i just bought an Fn49 that was completely unissued. THAT my friends is a rifle worth keeping as is.

On mitchell; i cant comment on your opinion of them, i bought 2 M48's (one for parts) and found them quite enjoyable pieces to shoot. Both were of standard quality and both shoot better than my Re-arsenaled K98 of 44 manufacture (expected) AND my '42 Teak wood 98K with an VG bore and matching #'s (surprised me). If he wants a display piece, he should be ready to pay for it. If he wants a shooter, it wont be of any real value left to destroy through sporterizing. From the sounds of it he is on a budget so the chances of him getting a piece whose value would be sharply harmed through modification is mind blowingly slim

All depends on where you happen to live. Over here in California, good luck finding a deal for less than $300, let alone $150. Without a C & R, which I've got my dad in the process of getting (21 age requirement), Californians are looking at a $50-80 transfer/DROS fee on top of purchase. Sadly, a good majority of local gunshops such as where you live don't sell online. I've got a friend of mine in Utah who is going to send me a nice Mauser from his gunshop once I get the C & R.

Congrats on the FN-49. I hear they are pretty damn nice rifles. What did you end up paying, around $800? Only thing I have seen up close that is similar was an Egpytian Hakim that had major feeding problems.

I will personally never buy from Mitchell's because I view his advertising as borderline fraudulent.

Re: Firearms Discussion Thread... For all you Gun Lovers.

Yeah i forgot some folks live in states where firearm transactions are in and of themselves an expensive endeavor. My apologies for that.

I was surprised to see an FN, it was my first trip to this particular shop and i had heard they sold surplus up the yinyang. So i stroll in, and lo and behold an entire rack full of Mosins in all forms, K98's 1903s(!) a half dozen Garands some specialty Class 3 stuff i'll never be able to afford and all by its lonesome, an FN49 for only $750 still in grease paper. Needless to say i bought it right quick and havent look back since. shoots nice and ammo for it is easy and cheap to obtain. Only issue i guess is the removalable wooden handguard top piece is rather thin and i imagine vigorous use would end up breaking it if ever subjected to combat.

I drove down south to Paso Robles for a competition, and passed by this small town with a population of around 2,000. They have a gunshop in there with mainly antiques (pre-1906) and a lot of funky cartridges. There is a pristine 1903 there that I would love to pick up when I head out there next year.

Sometimes it comes down to pure luck.

Now that I see the relative low price of the Mosin-Nagants, I am wondering whether it would be a good idea to buy enough for my ROTC unit's drill team. They aren't Garands, but they sure beat full-plastic replicas.

At the gunshop in town they have an HR Garand for $600 and a Springfield for $850. Once I get enough money im going to get the Springfield. I prefer that over the HR because Id rather own somthing with a bit of history. Ill probably get a ww2 era sling and bayonet too, just for decoration. But first I got to get a cleaning rod, bayonet, sight hood, and a sling for my K98. An expensive hobby...

I'm thinking of replacing the skeleton stock with a MAGPUL PRS-10 adjustable stock.

http://www.magpul.com/catalog/images/PRS.JPG

Vertical345 November 14th, 2006 11:53 AM

Re: Firearms Discussion Thread... For all you Gun Lovers.

Hmmm, that sounds like a good idea but im just wondering, would that stock get in the way of the charging handle at all? I've seen them on AR-15s but it looks like pulling back the handle would be more complicated because the stock is raised there about half an inch. I know you can still pull it back all the way, but I think it might be alittle harder to do.

In the picture you have for example, if you have a big hand, getting it between the scope and raised part on the stock would be alittle tough, don't you think?

RLt.W1982 November 14th, 2006 11:58 AM

Re: Firearms Discussion Thread... For all you Gun Lovers.

I could see that as a problem on a CAR stock, but not so much on this one. We'll see. The way the stock is designed is that you use the hand not holding the pistol grip to pull the butt into your shoulder, like you do on a machine gun, so my hand wouldn't get in the way.

Heh, I tole a friend about aimsurplus's prices for weapons, and he was considering buying Mosin Nagants for his friends(note the plural) back in Kentucky.

One thing I am curious about is why they didn't just ban SMGs and let people use Assault rifles. SMGs are easier to conceal and
(I would think) cheaper to buy lots of ammo for, in other words, ideal for gangs and other violent individuals. Assault rifles can be used also, but they aren't as common, and are a wee bit harder to hide.

these aren't assualt rifles since they lack the full auto or any burst mode for that matter. All full auto weapons were deemed illegal for sale without MAJOR restrictions post-prohibition. In fact the assualt weapon ban severley affected pistol and pistol cartridge carbines with ceartain features: Tec 9, Macs, Uzi copies and the ilk were resitricted in magazine capacity, barrel length and folding stocks just like there higher caliber countrerparts.

I know the mm designation, but it is never referred as the 7.62x63mm NATO. No NATO weapons have ever used that cartridges (new designs excluding ones of old, such as the M1 or M1919) after 1957.

There is no real definition of assault weapons. Pretty much any weapon that looks like a military weapon or looks intimidating is considered an assault weapon...

Like the case of the SPAS12 I loved that gon since childhood, Ever since I saw it in Jurassic Park. lol I finally got enough money to get one recently and I went to the gun shop. I asked if they happened to aquire a SPAS 12 I would be very interested. Well the owner who I know because of so many sales, told me that they were illegal. Considered an Assault weapon...

The length of the barrel makes up for the folding stock... The gun is monsterous how do they expect anyone to conseal it? And you can buy a fixed stock for it. It shoots in semi auto with a maximum shell load of 8 rounds not like many legal guns...

In the end I loved the gun so much I got a Tokyo Marui Airsoft replica. I don't know much about airsoft but Ive read this is the best model. Its for display only since ive grown out of bb guns...:(

You really think he's going to go to a gun store, go through a background check making sure he has no history of felonies and a test to make sure he's sane, and then start a crime spree? You know when you get a foid you get an FBI number? If something happens with the same caliber of bullet your gun uses near you the police will start investigating you? Why do you people insist on demonizing us?

Does that mean if I get an expensive ww2 relic Sturmgewehr44 assault rifle that shoots in automatic im going to suddenly turn on my Police buddy's?

· Enactment of the “Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act.” Within a year of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast, Congress passed the NRA-backed H.R. 5013, sponsored by Representative Bobby Jindal (R-La.), by an overwhelming 322-99 vote. This bill amended federal emergency laws to prohibit federal, state, and local authorities from confiscating lawfully-owned firearms during emergencies or disasters. Senator David Vitter’s (R-La.) amendment to prohibit the use of funds appropriated under the Homeland Security appropriations bill (H.R. 5441) for the confiscation of lawfully possessed firearms during an emergency or disaster passed the U.S. Senate by an historic 84-16 vote. The Jindal bill was substituted for the Vitter amendment in the conference committee and President Bush signed it into law on October 4.

I love this one. Why would they confiscate legally owned firearms anyways?

Oooooo 1100 $ or 2000$ big deal that is chump change. Its nothing compared to peoples rights being taken away. You looking to monopolise on peoples right to bear arms is just wrong. Saleing guns to make a profit is not what the majority thinks if you realy even own a gun. Most people own one for the sport and the joy of shooting and hunting. No real gun owner would look forward to getting rid of his/her guns.
