Probably more than just the rifling, if you look along the barrel you can see pieces of rust protruding from the edges.

I asked a friend who understands more about old guns than me, his opinion was that the gun is beyond repair.

edit: Do you know a company called Taurus? It seems to produce look-a-likes of Smith&Wesson revolvers, I wondered if they catch a good price.

Hmm. Rust is tricky. Sometimes it can be just copper fouling, or possibly as your friend said, the whole thing is bad. One of my Nagants had what looked like rust in the bore (I hate Nagant bores. It is an extreme pain to make sure everything is cleaned) and the majority of it just happened to be fouling.

Yes, I know Taurus. They are a Brazilian based company, but also have a U.S.A. branch, that mimic a lot of popular handguns, from revolvers to semiautomatics. They are mainly known for their Raging Bull series. The price varies of course, but a revolver going for between $300-500 wouldn't surprise me.

The guns are sadly stored in a locker which doesn't have a very good climate (a bit too wet I guess). Well, I'll have to buy a new locker or sell the guns anyway soon as there is a new legislation for weapons-storage.

This legislation also causes the value of most weapons to sink a lot right now, so I guess I'll better invest in a new locker.

Maybe I'll have to sell some of those guns in the US if you get so much money there, but it'll probably be rather difficult to export a weapon into another country with the strict German legislation.

If you pay more than 150 dollars for a rebuilt K98 with mismatched parts you're a fool. History is one thing but as Col. Cooper states, only accurate rifles are interesting. I agree that drilling and tapping a museum quality piece is retarded but if all you want is a cheap shooting rifle then by all means bubba-tize a broke dick 98 or Mosin. They ARENT worth much because whether or not you find the history of them cool, they still made millions upon millions of the bastards that are in fairly decent shape and widely available. If i hadnt just TDY'd here to Mississippi I would show you my local gun shop in SC that sells rebuilt K98's for 100 a pop (up to 300 for the unissued or lightly used ones) and 80 bucks for Mosins in ANY shape.

For example, i just bought an Fn49 that was completely unissued. THAT my friends is a rifle worth keeping as is.

On mitchell; i cant comment on your opinion of them, i bought 2 M48's (one for parts) and found them quite enjoyable pieces to shoot. Both were of standard quality and both shoot better than my Re-arsenaled K98 of 44 manufacture (expected) AND my '42 Teak wood 98K with an VG bore and matching #'s (surprised me). If he wants a display piece, he should be ready to pay for it. If he wants a shooter, it wont be of any real value left to destroy through sporterizing. From the sounds of it he is on a budget so the chances of him getting a piece whose value would be sharply harmed through modification is mind blowingly slim

All depends on where you happen to live. Over here in California, good luck finding a deal for less than $300, let alone $150. Without a C & R, which I've got my dad in the process of getting (21 age requirement), Californians are looking at a $50-80 transfer/DROS fee on top of purchase. Sadly, a good majority of local gunshops such as where you live don't sell online. I've got a friend of mine in Utah who is going to send me a nice Mauser from his gunshop once I get the C & R.

Congrats on the FN-49. I hear they are pretty damn nice rifles. What did you end up paying, around $800? Only thing I have seen up close that is similar was an Egpytian Hakim that had major feeding problems.

I will personally never buy from Mitchell's because I view his advertising as borderline fraudulent.

Yeah i forgot some folks live in states where firearm transactions are in and of themselves an expensive endeavor. My apologies for that.

I was surprised to see an FN, it was my first trip to this particular shop and i had heard they sold surplus up the yinyang. So i stroll in, and lo and behold an entire rack full of Mosins in all forms, K98's 1903s(!) a half dozen Garands some specialty Class 3 stuff i'll never be able to afford and all by its lonesome, an FN49 for only $750 still in grease paper. Needless to say i bought it right quick and havent look back since. shoots nice and ammo for it is easy and cheap to obtain. Only issue i guess is the removalable wooden handguard top piece is rather thin and i imagine vigorous use would end up breaking it if ever subjected to combat.

I drove down south to Paso Robles for a competition, and passed by this small town with a population of around 2,000. They have a gunshop in there with mainly antiques (pre-1906) and a lot of funky cartridges. There is a pristine 1903 there that I would love to pick up when I head out there next year.

Sometimes it comes down to pure luck.

Now that I see the relative low price of the Mosin-Nagants, I am wondering whether it would be a good idea to buy enough for my ROTC unit's drill team. They aren't Garands, but they sure beat full-plastic replicas.

Can you find me American guns for under $100 each? Preferably enough for me to buy 10-20 of them for under $800.
