I've seen those go at a local gunshow for about $2000, the K98 with both scope variants; High turret and whatever the claw one is called.

that kinda cash i'd just buy another Weatherby. for 2 bills it better be able to shoot the cock off a dust mite history or no...

suprisingly, Mosin Nagant snipers arent all that expensive, just hard to find. probably because so many were made.

Wait, the Mosin-Nagant plain or the sniper version?

Seeing as how the weapon is almost the same, and the sniper versions are just ones that seemed more accurate, or have a heavier barrel, couldn't you try your luck with a normal Mosin? I am guessing that many of the ones you can pick up for under $100 were never fired.

to RoboGamer:
Adding a long range scope to a shooter K98 is like adding a turbo kit to a winnibago. Even the best war issue K98's arent going to be worth much at over 300 yards and beyond that you'll be lucky to put lead on target. what you CAN do however is get a russian rearsenal K98 for less than 100 bucks, get it drilled and tapped, and put a Tasco scope from Wal-Mart on her. Thats probably an good setup and will allow you to accurately (about 3 MOA) shoot out to 100 to 300 yards.
If you HAVE to roll with it though. Get the Yugo M48/a Mausers. Mitchell has a shiat load of them in unfired condition, its a faithful replica of the German K98 (i think its superior) and will fit any sight you want to put on there.
the best shooting K98's your likely to see:http://www.mauser.org/rifles/german_k98/index.htm
M48's for the budget minded shooter aiming for performance over name:
http://www.mauser.org/rifles/hist_m48/index.htm
bit harder finding scopes and mounts, ebay has a few, most collectors are out and the ones available demand a premium. so if you have $2000 to blow on an old scope, here ya go:http://cgi.ebay.com/German-WWII-ZF41...QQcmdZViewItem

I could be getting mixed up by what you consider long range though, my best iron and glass is a Weatherby .270 with a Swarovski PV and i can put a hole through dinner plate at about 700 or so yards off hand.

To Crazy:
Ive seen plenty of original sniper Mosins with the bent bolt handle and original mounts. whats hard to find are period sights for the bastards in good condition. The Sovs were all about sniping so they had shiat loads of them made. (they were easy to find 3 years ago anyway. they might be a bit more rare these days like the non greek M1's) heres a good reference on them in general http://www.mosinnagant.net/sniper%20...ke-snipers.asp

NEVER drill any kind of old war-issue rifle, ESPECIALLY a German Mauser. The value of it is completely ruined. A 98k is much too nice of a weapon to put a piece of shit scope mount on it. If you are going to do that, buy a yugo M48 or an SKS. You can mount scopes on those WITHOUT having to drill/tap the receiver.

Russian Capture 98ks are more than $100 bucks Roaming East, so I don't know where you are getting your figures from. They typically range from anywhere from $250-$400 depending on condition and quality.

Never by a Mitchell's Mauser. That guy is notorious for putting his own fake marks on the Mausers he sells, and on top of that, he is trying to pass off 'post-war yugoslavian mausers' made in 1948 as actual German model 98s, which is a load of bullshit. He is overpriced as well for his mixed-match serial numbers on rifles he is selling for $600+. Don't buy from him.

If you want a cheap and reliable Yugoslavian version of the 98, you cannot go wrong with an M48. For $110, plus shipping and transfer fees, you can get a rifle that performs just as well as a K98 without putting a big dent in your wallet. You can also put a scope mount on it, if I recall correctly, without permanently removing your rifle's older value.

I recommend AIM Surplus:

Nagants are extremely cheap. You can get a 91/30, M44, or M38 for around $100. Here's an M44:

http://aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Russian_M44.html#a240

I just bought a Russian Capture 98k, not matching but all of the German markings, complete with intact swastikas, for $280, +50 shipping/packaging (came with a case), and then more for transfer fees.

Here she is:

If you are seriously interested in purchasing a mauser, nagant, or any kind of rifle, whether it be an SKS or an Enfield, I recommend:

www.gunbroker.com

and

www.auctionarms.com

I have never purchased off of auction arms, but I bought my SKS through gunbroker. Both have excellent search features and protect you from fraud.

Remember, don't buy from Mitchell's Mausers. NEVER.

Here are a few pictures I uploaded a while ago:

There are a few more, but these are probably the most interesting guns. One of the revolvers at the top is a Schilling Suhl, and last gun is obviously a C-96.
I don't know much about the other two weapons.

If you ever want to sell that C96, give me a holler. :deal:

I will probably sell a few guns, but not the C-96 :)
It's in a bad condition anyway, the barrel is rusty and the gun is assembled from parts with different serial numbers.

I understand.

So it is the rifling that is rusted out?
