I finally saw the movie Kingdom of Heaven last weekend, and I remember one quote that really struck me as important. So many people use religion as an excuse to kill, and it has been that way for millenia. I personally thought this quite accuratly captures what religon, in it's traditional definition, means to me.

Quote:
I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What god desires is here
*points to head*
and here.
*points to heart*
And by what you decide to do eveyday, will make you a good man... or not.
But what is more sad is when people "Arent" Fanatical about their religion, like the priest (was it a priest? I have not seen the movie in some time) in Jerusalem.

Ah.. Lets convert, and then convert back later!
Lovely quote...
Besides, if anyone held true to their religion, we would all be screwed.
Lets face it, we can't always turn the other cheek, but if we could avoid beating the crap out of each other for no good reason, we would be fine.
Haven't read the book yet. Figured I would wait until after the movie so that I am not put down by the movie if it is hugely different from the book.
I always got a kick out of the fact that almost every religion talks about turning the other cheek and accepting people for who they are, and then decide they want to rid the world of others if they are not the same religion. Look at the crusades. Bunch of Christians tearing around the middle east converting people or killing them. Can you feel the love?
I just remembered something that a friend of mine used to do. I don't know if everyone here knows Jehovah's Witnesses, but we have them a plenty in Canada. My friend would invite them in whenever they tried to convert them and then point out the particulars of their religion in the bible and where it contradicts what they preach. It was at the point where they would keep sending their next highest person in the chain until the highest in the area had talked to him. After that they just gave up and didn't talk to him ever again. Apparently they didn't like having someone show proof of how their religion contradicts what they try to sell. I always got a good laugh out of that.
