Religion Explained

I finally saw the movie Kingdom of Heaven last weekend, and I remember one quote that really struck me as important. So many people use religion as an excuse to kill, and it has been that way for millenia. I personally thought this quite accuratly captures what religon, in it's traditional definition, means to me.

Quote:

I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What god desires is here

*points to head*

and here.

*points to heart*

And by what you decide to do eveyday, will make you a good man... or not.

Yup, I think thats right.

But what is more sad is when people "Arent" Fanatical about their religion, like the priest (was it a priest? I have not seen the movie in some time) in Jerusalem.

Ah.. Lets convert, and then convert back later!

Lovely quote...

Besides, if anyone held true to their religion, we would all be screwed.

Lets face it, we can't always turn the other cheek, but if we could avoid beating the crap out of each other for no good reason, we would be fine.

It will be quotes galore after tomorrow.

The release of The Da Vinci Code will cause religion battles all over the world, on every message board and so on.

Can't wait!

Da Vinci Code was well written except its pure fiction.

Re: Religion Explained

Haven't read the book yet. Figured I would wait until after the movie so that I am not put down by the movie if it is hugely different from the book.
I always got a kick out of the fact that almost every religion talks about turning the other cheek and accepting people for who they are, and then decide they want to rid the world of others if they are not the same religion. Look at the crusades. Bunch of Christians tearing around the middle east converting people or killing them. Can you feel the love?

Yeah my mom is in to that Da Vinci code game online. However I want to see the movie. Anything with Tom Hanks is good.

Re: Religion Explained

I love watching the Christians scramble to react to the Da Vinci code as if it was a total attack on their faith.

Sure you could call it offensive, but its only a work of fiction.. no more reality than Star Wars.

But really, if you want to be Christian.. Muslim, Hindu or otherwise read the book before you make choices...

Re: Religion Explained

I just remembered something that a friend of mine used to do. I don't know if everyone here knows Jehovah's Witnesses, but we have them a plenty in Canada. My friend would invite them in whenever they tried to convert them and then point out the particulars of their religion in the bible and where it contradicts what they preach. It was at the point where they would keep sending their next highest person in the chain until the highest in the area had talked to him. After that they just gave up and didn't talk to him ever again. Apparently they didn't like having someone show proof of how their religion contradicts what they try to sell. I always got a good laugh out of that.

thats a nice quote indeed USMA.

#2. People should remember the da vinci code is fiction. even Discovery channel busted the whole story a few weeks ago..

Re: Religion Explained

Quite right. Religion is often abused for all kinds of things, that's why I don't like the church and similar institutions. You can just as well live by the same principles without going to a designated building for doing it, only that you avoid the risk of your faith being abused by the people who own the building.

Re: Religion Explained

Yea, that is a good quote. Simply it's kinda saying God will always tell you what is right or what is wrong. But you have decide whether to listen or not. And USMA you must be pretty adamant about it cause you wrote about the damn thing twice.

Re: Religion Explained

What Langon says at the end of the movie is correct. Basically.

There is no difference between Jesus being human or divine, perhaps to be human, is to be divine.

Excellent.

Shut up about the damn Da Vinci Code already. It was totally made up. And the thread isn't about that damn movie, or Tom Hanks' hair.

Too right, religion is just a bunch of mind control.

Peace and tolerance untell someone disagrees.

Turn your back on the vile religious establishment!!!

Re: Religion Explained

Wow, you totally missed the point.

Religion drives people to do terribly, cruel things. The crusades, terrorism, televangelism, et cetera.

It is following a higher moral code, being a good person, that makes you a holy man. Not a cross on your chest, or a huge hat on your head. Doing the right thing puts you in God's good graces, living a good life. Doing evil deeds in His name won't.

Oh, and stop listening to punk rock. It's all bullshit.

Re: Religion Explained

people have used religeon for their own reasons since it was made. i would respect it much more if people under a religeon would not just blindly fallow their leaders.
USMA this reminds me of that thing going on right now. that crazy mormon leader who has a lot of fallowers. he uses religeon to control the people and use them. its sad.
i also would like to see religeon adapt to new knowledge. such as evolution and that the earth revolves around the sun. stuff like this should be integrated into religeon. but some people are just to stubburn.

Re: Religion Explained

Just be atheist and do things that you think are morally correct, cause some 2000 year book isn't a good source. A lot can change in 2000 years, but if something stays the way it is than it isn't a very good thing to base your whole life, vaule system, Sunday, etc. around. Just use a good moral code and if God exisists than he will let you go to heaven if it exisits. I don't really belive in either but I still have moral code.

I feel that having a strong religion, and being a good person go hand in hand.

I am Christian, and i do my best to be a good person, sure i joke around every now and then, and do my share of "bad" things. But all in all, its my religion that keeps me being a good person

I mean that I agree with you, USMA2010. I was trying to be funny. I'm sorry it didn't translate well.

And as for punk rock, to say that I hate it would be to say that the sea of Japan is damp!!!

Re: Religion Explained

Wow, this is getting deep. Feels like a pub topic it's so meaningful.
Religion works in positive ways sometimes and negative ways other times.
The basis for religion is good and the way it drives people to succeed and live their life in a good fashion is awesome. However, the wars, the debates, the constantly trying to convince other people to join and all that rubbish is just not worth it.
The world could do without religion and still function. This is my opinion.

religion started of as a goog idea it helped police people in a time long ago. religion was used to scare people into doing good and not comiting crime. It also helped guide people to do what is right. some people will use it as a excuse to comite evil acts because these acts are in their minds!the core of religion is a good and feir way to live ur life

I like that positive spin...I think there is a corelation too. While I can't stand most religions I like a sense of spirtuality. It goes a long way.
