Do you have a job?

Okay I know that there's been a shitload of this threads but I don't care because I got a job today :D

So, do you have a job? If you do, where do you work, what do you do, how much do they pay you, do you like it or hate it?

The job I got is at "The cancer and allergy fund". Basically I sit at an old computer from the late '80s wich has an 12" screen and some kind of ms-dos OS. The computer calls up people and i'm trying to convince them to donate money to us, it's a very ungrateful job I tell you, VERY ungrateful, there's alot of rude people out there...
Anyway, the good thing is that the say that they're gonna get new computers in a week or two.
I get 18.8% of what people donates to me, wich isn't too bad. I sat about 1 hour at the phone today (it was a testday) and I collected around 87 bucks, that's like 17 bucks on one hour(I think, I suck at math) :deal:, but I doubt I will have that much luck everyday.

So, tell me about your job, if you have one.

Re: Do you have a job?

Congrats on your new Job Mast3rofPuppets! If it sucks or not (most jobs do) it's money right?

I too just got a 'new' job a couple weeks ago. I am a Gateway Technical Support Agent. When people go to www.gateway.com and call that Technical support number, it goes to me (or the other 300 tech's). We then try and figure out the problems your having with your PC, and either troubleshoot with you to fix it, or bring it in for service. It's not a fun job, but sometimes I get some cool people, others can be rude, and some are plain stupid and should NOT own a PC.

A guy called the other day because he put a floppy disk in backwards, and when he went to pull it out the metal on the disk bent and got stuck. (moron!).

anyway that's it. It's long 8 and 9 hour days, full-time. Right now I am on 3pm-11pm, but it changes all the time.

Re: Do you have a job?

Thanks Gizmo :), and yeah, some people can be very rude, this is one if the phonecalls I called today:

-Me: Hi, i'm calling form the cancer and allergy fund blablablabla do you want to donate some money to support our work?
-Him: You know what, I have four kids and I drive a car, and you environment funds hate cars so I hate you
*CLICK*

I was like :wtf: I mean environment fund? wtf? We're collecting money to support cancer and allergy research, wtf does that have to do with environment?

Re: Do you have a job?

well before I started college I worked at my uncle's ball bearing relubrication facility for the military, mainly for helichopters and APC's. I liked it, it was pretty easy, I worked in a clean room all day cleaning ball bearings with special cleaners like AK-225 and relubing with all sorts of oils/greases from all over the world. It was a slightly toxic job, because it's not good to inhale the cleaners or get them on your bare skin.

Since I was working with my uncle I got payed very well about 17 euros an hour. It was the first job I ever had.

Re: Do you have a job?

I'm an 'internet administrator' at a newspaper company. I build a few pages, edit a few pages, fix a few pages, delete a few pages, shout at the IDIOTS in telesales for not filling all the banner space, create logos for companies who have bought banner space, etc etc etc. It's the first job I've had where I actually didn't mind being there, unlike the job at Epson in human resources I had about a year ago. Have you ever had an urge to jump out of the nearest window just to see what would happen? I have... working for Epson :p.

YOU'RE ONE OF THEM! LYNCH HIM!

The reason most people are rude with people who do your job, is because you're generally not the first salesperson they've had call them that day, and you probably won't be the last. We had to register with some call blocking service just because the phone was ringing every five seconds from someone trying to get us to buy something, or donate to somebody. In fact, most people consider the fact that you're phoning them at all to be rude in itself. We all know it's just some guy doing their job, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. And after five or six calls on a Sunday afternoon, you really don't care who's on the other end, you just want the phone to stop ringing...
You probably shouldn't take it personally really. Just remember your experience when you receive a phone call from some guy trying to sell you double glazing. I know I'm a bit nicer to the folks at store checkouts, since my part-time ordeal during my unemployment...

Heh, I usually just try and be patient with them. Most of the ones we get are quite persistent though, and usually rather intrusive. The last one we had was asking rather personal financial questions, and for some reason they got quite angry when told that was private. But for something like a charity, if they weren't too pushy, I probably wouldn't be rude with them.

My dad has this rather cruel trick though. He'll answer the phone. They'll ask for someone. Even if it's him they're looking for, he'll say,
"Hold on a minute, I'll go and get them."
Then he'll put the phone on the table and walk off, and leave it off the hook for half an hour or so. I don't think they wait for very long though

You could, but I won't give you the link. What with me working for them, it could very understandably be perceived as advertising. However, if you grab Google or suchlike, and put 'Shropshire' and 'Star' in the search box, you'll probably find a URL to that effect. By to that effect, I mean, very, very, very similar to that. And while you're there, you'll probably find a link to something called 'Job Finder', which is a sister site and the one I'm most involved in right now.
