A Warning on a Internet Scam I'm not sure if you all know about this new internet scam or not so I thought I would tell you. A couple of weeks back, me and my boyfriend recieved our phone bill only to see it had almost trebled in price. We soon found out that we had a dialler installed into our computer unknowingly by some people in the island of Sao Toma, off Africa, that connected to a premium rate dialler which meant every time we connected to the internet, we were connecting to this premium rate dialler. It was an awful scam but luckily, we discovered it quite quickly and my boyfriend has installed a program called Adaware which seems to be preventing it. Sorry if this has already been mentioned. Best Wishes, Natasha |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam Try downloading Spybot. Doesnt work as well as Lavasoft's Adware but it gets the job done. |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam Diallers can be a real plague. I also use Spybot and AdAware just to be on the safe side. Oh, and of course a virus-scanner + firewall. |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam I may sound very silly but I'm useless with computers but what is a firewall? Do you need to install it? I'm very sorry. Please excuse my ignorance. Best Wishes, Natasha |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam it stops most hackers from getting into your computer... if you get something other than 56k (internet where you have to use a phone line to connect to the internet) you shouldn't have a problem with teh dialer thingy |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam if you're using dsl, or a 2 way cable modem, you can safely remove your dialup modem from your pc or just unplug the phone line from it to prevent those dialers from working. |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam yea that happend to my bro...it scared the hell out of him cuz it said 250 when it usally cost 40. btw: love your avatar n0e. |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam It is indeed very worrying. We had a whole list of phone calls made to Sao Tome. It was only when I rung up an adviser that I found out what it really was. Luckily, I dont spend that much time on the internet so the phone bill wasn't too extreme but it was still over our usuall price. Best Wishes, Natasha |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam get cable that will def solve the problem! |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam Heh. OUCH! Don't worry, diallers aren't new internet scams. They've been hooking the un-aware for ages now. A firewall may help even more than an adware blocker/detector. A friend of mine upgraded to broadband a while ago, and thought he was safe. But he'd never unplugged the 56k modem! He wanted it as a spare or something, in case his broadband ISP went down. Anyway, one day he heard this funny screaching noise while he was eating, and it was a dialler, using his 56k modem while he wasn't even there! He had a phone bill of hundreds, too... |

If you'd like to install a firewall we will help you of course. I can recommend the one from Zone-Labs or one called "Lock'n'stop" (last time I checked you could download them for free). The configuration can be a bit tricky if you don't work with PCs a lot, but just ask here if you have problems with that. Other helpful things to make your PC safe would be to download those Microsoft-security-updates (though this is perhaps not a good idea with a 56k modem) and to get another web-browser (Internet Explorer isn't very safe) like Mozilla from www.mozilla.org. . A good (free) virus scanner would be Anti-Virus-Personal. |

What is the name of the websites where I can install the firewall. Thankyou very much. Best Wishes, Natasha |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam I found this site: http://www.firewallguide.com/ It might help you out, it's got some basics on firewalls, some links to and reviews of firewalls, stuff like that. It's also got a few other bits and pieces that might interest you though I didn't dig around too much. |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam Anyone who gets ripped off deserves to be ripped off. besides older people, I mean come on, most scams are easy to spot. |
Re: A Warning on a Internet Scam I don't think diallers are actually classed as 'scams'. If you're not so good with a computer, maybe don't even know they exist, you're vulnerable. |

No problem, here are some links: http://www.free-av.com/ free virus-scanner, which is quite good. I already wrote the link to www.mozilla.org (you can choose between two downloads there, mozilla 1.7 and firefox 0.9.something, as you don't need all the stuff that comes with the mozilla 1.7 download I would recommend getting firefox). -A link to a side with reviews of firewalls has been posted already, I'll just include the direct link to http://www.zonelabs.com, where you can get "Zonealarm", which is a very good firewall. If you download all of this with a 56k modem it's going to take some hours. MAybe it's a good idea to ask a friend with a faster internet connection if he/she can download those programs for you and burn them on cd. But if you like downloading you should definetly get http://www.getright.com/, this program lets you resume downloads if you have to turn the PC off at some point or if you get disconnected (without such a program you have to start the interrupted downloads all over again!). Well, of course there are some other nice litlte programs which I could recommend, but I guess that's enough for now ;) |

I've chosen the Free Virus Scanner from http://www.free-av.com/. When I have more time, I'll try downloading the rest as it is definately worth it. Best Wishes, Natasha |
