A firewall is supposed to prevent people from hacking into your system. I didn't use any for a long time and didn't have any problems because of that, but as I like to use onlinebanking now I try to make my PC at least a bit more safe :)

If you'd like to install a firewall we will help you of course. I can recommend the one from Zone-Labs or one called "Lock'n'stop" (last time I checked you could download them for free).
The configuration can be a bit tricky if you don't work with PCs a lot, but just ask here if you have problems with that.

Other helpful things to make your PC safe would be to download those Microsoft-security-updates (though this is perhaps not a good idea with a 56k modem) and to get another web-browser (Internet Explorer isn't very safe) like Mozilla from www.mozilla.org. .
A good (free) virus scanner would be Anti-Virus-Personal.

Thankyou very much:)

What is the name of the websites where I can install the firewall.

Thankyou very much.

I found this site: http://www.firewallguide.com/

It might help you out, it's got some basics on firewalls, some links to and reviews of firewalls, stuff like that. It's also got a few other bits and pieces that might interest you though I didn't dig around too much.

Anyone who gets ripped off deserves to be ripped off. besides older people, I mean come on, most scams are easy to spot.

I don't think diallers are actually classed as 'scams'. If you're not so good with a computer, maybe don't even know they exist, you're vulnerable.

No problem,
here are some links:
http://www.free-av.com/ free virus-scanner, which is quite good.
I already wrote the link to www.mozilla.org (you can choose between two downloads there, mozilla 1.7 and firefox 0.9.something, as you don't need all the stuff that comes with the mozilla 1.7 download I would recommend getting firefox).
-A link to a side with reviews of firewalls has been posted already, I'll just include the direct link to http://www.zonelabs.com, where you can get "Zonealarm", which is a very good firewall.

If you download all of this with a 56k modem it's going to take some hours. MAybe it's a good idea to ask a friend with a faster internet connection if he/she can download those programs for you and burn them on cd.
But if you like downloading you should definetly get http://www.getright.com/, this program lets you resume downloads if you have to turn the PC off at some point or if you get disconnected (without such a program you have to start the interrupted downloads all over again!).

Well, of course there are some other nice litlte programs which I could recommend, but I guess that's enough for now ;)

Many thanks, MrFancyPants:)
I've chosen the Free Virus Scanner from http://www.free-av.com/. When I have more time, I'll try downloading the rest as it is definately worth it.

Best Wishes,
Natasha
