The bullet begins to drop the instant it leaves the barrel of your weapon.

That isn't correct. Pistols and SMGs in FH2 fire their ammunition at realistic muzzle velocities, which is between 250 and 400 m/s for less powerful calibres, if I remember correctly.
The gravity simulated by the BF2 engine behaves in a realistic manner. Every second, an object in the air gains negative vertical speed of roughly 10 metres per second (meaning that after 2 seconds, the speed will be 20).
Since the BF2 engine doesn't support air resistance that would considerably slow the bullets in reality, the gravity in FH2 is twice as high for bullets to achieve a realistic bullet drop at long ranges.
Knowing these facts, it is easy to come to the conclusion, that the range of a weapon isn't determined by cone of fire or magnification of the sights, but merely by the shooter's ability to compensate the bullet drop. On Sfakia I made the experience that the MP40 is still nearly equal in firepower to a rifle at medium range.
