Default So do i understand this right?

What im think i have read is that the server files plus a password protected torrent off the game files a day or 2 in advance only

Why not a a regular download for thoose that dosent use torrents, and still make it password proteckted so u cant install without the password?
Why shut som people have a disadvantage over others? iff its the case, i know that other mods did this but they made sure that you cut download both kind even with passwords.

Iff im wrong and there will be a regular pre-download for all too with password, just ignore.
Otherwise i would like to understand why?

It puts ALOT less strain on servers. Regardless of when FH2 is released on HTTP & FTP servers they will get raped for days as everyone will want to download it. With a Torrent release there is none of this as everyone chips in with uploading.

Its all to do with making it easier to get a hold of. Ever try downloading the BF2 demo the day it came out? It was hell and every DL server was bogged right down and speeds we not much better than dial up at times.

I think the torrent file is used by mirror owners to download the file and releasing it on there mirrors at the exact moment when the password is released. Otherwise there won't be any mirrors (maybe 1, but that will probably get overloaded fast). Correct me if I'm wrong.

The torrent link has been sent this out morning. AFAIK there is no restrictions since the file is password protected anyway.

The reason why it is done by torrent only, is indeed the horrible strain a pure download would generate as MG42Maniac said.

Cheers,
mokum

You've got a point, but it's not about that.

The torrent is being released two days before hand to take stress off regular download servers on release day. Just imagine what they'll be like with everyone jumping on the bandwagon trying to get their download. It'll be mayhem, and not everyone will get a chance.

Torrents are an excellent way of doing so because they push clients to seed, and this can be unlimited. There's no strain on a server, because all the files are being shared out in a sort of network. In fact, the more clients the better, because d/l speeds shoot up.

If you release a passworded client two days before the official release, then you're back to square one with the servers stuffed full of people bashing away with their F5 buttons.

Torrents dont give an advantage to some users, it just gives people a chance to miss the fuss and play bang on Friday Dec 14th 7:00pm GMT, if they want to.

I hope I got at least half of that right, anyway.

Why not just using a torrent like Azureus or any other? Think everyone should be able to do that and you might also just use it for the DL of FH2 and uninstall it after you finished your DL PriestDK. The reasons for the torrent predownload only were explained perfectly by MG42Maniac and the other guys that posted while i wrote this. It's also easier to resume a DL on a disconnect that way, on a regular DL you need a tool for that also.

Well, so we wait until the actual release because torrent sucks big time. Sucks my bandwidth and is way too slow from my experiences. I loath torrent with a vengeance beyond mortal kith and kin.

This torrent is not slow at all, its one of the fastest I have had to pleasure of using. If all torrents run very slowly for you then the problem is at your end either with your PC or ISP.
