Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

Just found this interview on Planet Battlefield:

Quote:

Last week, I got the opportunity to ask Lobo from the Forgotten Hope team a few questions about their Battlefield 2
adaption of their popular Battlefield 1942 mod: Forgotten Hope 2.

PBF: For those that don't know, give us a general description of Forgotten Hope 2.
FH: Forgotten Hope is a historically accurate World War II modification of the Entertainment Arts game Battlefield 1942, that strives to deliver all facets of WWII combat in a realistic, but enjoyable manner. This is, currently, one of the largest mods in existence with more than 250 vehicles, 150 hand weapons, and 70 custom maps. Forgotten Hope 2 is the next generation of historical combat, and we hope to include all the fun of FH 1, but greatly improved and enhanced with the Battlefield 2 engine.

Re: Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

PBF: There were a lot of theaters of war in World War II. Which ones will Forgotten Hope 2 include?
FH: Any theater from WWII is fair game for FH 2, though the larger ones have priority. We will certainly start things off with the main theaters, such as Africa, Europe, Russia, and the Pacific. These theaters are so large, that most of them will incorporate many different armies and will continue to expand over the course of development.

so we mite see more armys?

Smoke artillery, Ironsites, Sappers, and more!
No mention of Alternative loadouts for tanks(HE/AT) Nor any mention of my beloved 88 but thats good enough for a first release to keep me happy.

ANZACSAS September 30th, 2005 01:47 AM

Re: Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

i didnt even read this one
PBF: Will there be any "handicap" maps, where two armies fight one, i.e. Germany's and Finland's assualt on Leningrad. (The two armies don't have to be cooperating.)
FH: We will explore the possibilities of the BF 2 engine to determine if we can include more then two armies in a map, but if it’s possible, you can expect to see multiple armies ganging-up.

it sounds like fun if it could work!

Re: Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

Well I'm sure a switching between HE and AT rounds feature will be in FH2, it's something lots of people always wanted for FH and it's very easy to implemend in BF2. I played the Project Reality Realism Mod for BF2 which already had HEAT and APFSDS selection. So the devs would be crazy to not use this feature.

Our last BF 1942 release, FH 7, will be released late September/early October.

This can't be right. It's already September 30th and we have no release date yet. And by the way, did Russia really fight Japan in Malaysia?

Very interesting - great to hear about the AI controlled C47s dropping supplies and paratroopers :D That will be awesome :D

Oh, Mandingo - I think he meant Manchuria. Silly interviewer?

It says No.IV rifle in there, but personally I think it should be No.I Mk.III since it is North Africa.

Finland's assault on Leningrad?

And even if it would be Romania / Hungary etc., Germany vs Russia , what would be the point that they would be killing comrades and enemies same time?

Well anyway looks good..

This combined with various ''we have few other things left to show'' and ''we are close to a release'' comments by devs themselves, I think we can expect a release date shortly

When youre in the middle of a wide open ocean of sand in a tank trying to take a well defended town, youre going to be real happy that your commander just made that big wall of smoke protecting you from all those nasty AT guns just dieing to ruin your day.

Re: Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

The answer may be obvious to all, but while they asked about air, land, and infantry units, there was no question about sea units. I'm not too clued into the issues with sea units, but I thought I read somewhere that the BF2 engine has problems with moving ships.

I'm curious of the FH2 team has a comment on the use of sea going units and would have liked to see that question asked. If there is a problem with sea units, then I guess the Pacific theatre will be limited and not the next to be introduced after Africa.

Yeah, because the lag will kick every single enemy force off the server, leaving me, in my tank, defending a town against a big vast sea of nothingness.
I just dont like the idea that's all, smoke barrages coming out of nowhere?

I'd rather have fun engaging the enemy than hiding behind a giant smoke screen. Okay, so what if I get killed. I play the game to have a battlefield raging on around me, I dont wanna have a stalemate behind some smoke.

It'll be so overly used in FH2 that people are going to get fed up of it, being able to see nothing all the time. It's going to take all the fun out of the game.

Wanna move forward? Use a smoke screen!

Want to defend this position? Use a smoke screen!

Need another Miller from the fridge? Use a smoke screen! Etc.

Re: Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

There are currently some problems with large moving objects (the fact that if you touch them, you die) which presents some problems for large naval ships. We can do them, but you wouldnt be able to exit and walk around on the deck.
Though I belive that the collision issues are being resolved in a future BF2 patch, so with any luck we can have giant battlecruisers blasting away on the open seas with salors happily running around on the decks.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

BF2 handles smoke effects very well, with very little performance hit. Smoke barrages dont come from no where, they come from artillery batteries.
and youre talking like it will have a 3 second cool down.

The process of game design seems lost on you.

Does anyone know the best e-mail address to use if I want to harass EA about this issue? It's pretty important to the future of FH2 that we have ships and boats.

And NCOL, I don't know how the devs plan to do it but it seems likely to me that the commander wouldn't be able to lay down an infinite amount of smoke but instead would have to wait for a while in between each smoke screen. Also in bf42 some mods seem to have smoke that doesn't cause a lot of lag.

edit: see mcgibs' edit.

nowhere? what, did i miss something.. dont the comander have artillery now..

i like the idea.. but it must likely aint gonna be used to lay down cover smoke but rather to blind the enemy by droping it on thier position.. wich imho would be damn anoying.

Thanks for the comment on ships, McGibs. And, BF2 1.03 is announced to be out in a day or two; hopefully, no more dying when a slow moving jeep touches me.

Smoke barrage should add some great variety to game play. It's a tactic used in WW2. I think they used it allot at the start of an engagement.

Re: Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

Yeah, that's another point I missed.

In BF2 you can rain down artillery shells on any part of a map. How annoying would it be if some retarded commander decided to either a) launch a barrage of smoke into your own base or b) do it to the other team's main base.

I'm not lost in game design, I'm just looking at it from a pessimistic view. It will be abused by players, and I dont want to see that happen to one awesome mod.

Also it's as if the team is going to be completely reliant on smoke screens to do anything. How much would that ruin gameplay?

I pretty sure we can put a "shield" around main bases to prevent the enemy commander from simply shelling the other commander's equipment. You actually have to get a sapper in to blow it up.

anything has the potential to be abused. thats why we have to design it so it doesnt get abused, but is still tacticly usefull (which requires alot of testing and trial and error)

Quote:

Again, youre thinking that he can just cover the entire map with smoke in 2 seconds, then keep doing it every 3 seconds. Smoke, like every other commander ability, will have cooldown/reload and also be linked to a map object which can be destroyed by the other team. A commander that uses nothing but smoke would be a moron. You can go around/though smoke. it doesnt kill you. you can shoot through it. its just a visual blind.

Re: Planet Battlefield Forgotten Hope 2 Interview

Hmm...

Okay, I trust in the Devs that it'll be done well, as always, it's just that I come off a CoD:UO server or a DoD:Source server and all I see is the overuse of smoke grenades.

I just cant imagine seeing it on an even bigger scale without doing something negative to the gameplay.

Looks like we'll have to see how it goes. But just bare my negative view on the subject in mind.

Smoke screen is gonna be fun and will work im pretty sure...

Would be fun though if itd be like those big battleships burning oil (if I remember correctly) to make big black smoke before debarquements wich was heavier than air so itd stay low and get onto beaches and cover the barges.

DITTO!

I never see any problems with smoke on my machine. You people out there with your XT's, AT's and 286's might just have to upgrade! JESUS!

Smoke on a large scale would be a great addition! Adds just that much more stratagy to the maps then just pouring in panzers and infantry at a flag. Another great reason is that it gives the commander something to do. From what I understand we won't have any Sat scans and UAV's so most commanders are gonna get bored and just join the slugfest. Anything we can realisticly give them to stay at there posts and command will be an assest to the game as a whole.

I'm thinking about the whole 'smoke blind/curtain' thing, and how exactly could it work? The smoke would need to be laid out in a curtain, not just a blob on the map, like artillery. Yet how could the commander use the smoke to cover a certain area from the enemy's view, if the only control he has over placement is clicking on the general area of it?
I'm thinking that perhaps for the placement of his smoke, the commander could click on two points, and smoke would be distributed between those two points evenly - so you could opt to cover the entire map, but there would be hardly any smoke at any one point, and would stay for only a few seconds.
Meanwhile, you could just drop it all in one blob and it would be extremely thick... or perhaps there could be a minimum length of smoke to be put down, and an optimum length of the smoke curtain at around 30-40m, so that it's long enough to conceal a large area, and thick enough to hide your movements well and for a reasonably long period of time. Perhaps instead of clicking twice you could hold the mouse down and 'draw' the smoke curtain.
I don't know if any of this is possible, coding wise, as the only commander options in BF2 vanilla are simple point and click affairs. But if FH could work out how to implement something like this it would really make the mod seem like something special (and we all know it is) and stand out from other mods.
Sound at all possible, devs? (Sorry this is off-topic...)
