Ahh... but how does he know where the enemy is? Thats 90% of the what the commander is doing, finding out where the enemy is. Considering FH2 will probably drop the overhead/satellite view that will become even tougher.

Squad leaders can call for arty strikes on their won, but the commander must appove them. When I play commander I usually give squad leaders who call strikes first priority, as they know excatly what is going on on the ground.

Agreed because what happens is in BF2, when a flag starts to turn, here comes the commanders arty shot, designed to take out the flag turners. In SP, the AI loves this...

I like the idea of a spot-before-you-shoot tactic. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing that for 0.7 for base fixed arty now.

Arty whoring just plain sucks.

It is literally point and click, no different from a commander orderign artillery on a particular map coordinate. For the sake of gameplay all the little middle men have been removed.
You answered my question. I thank you. Which brings me back to my original concern. I firmly believe removing all the middle men is completely unrealistic given it is WWII not modern warfare.

Since deathBob was gracious enough to explain the commander system in BF2 I hereby, given I am the center of the Universe, consider this conversation over. I wish you a pleasant journey to where ever you are going and hope to never see you again.

You might also consider english isn't everyones first language, me included. In fact it is my third language.

English is not my first language either, whatever "weight" that adds here, but at least i can ready the name of the person being quoted and compare it to mine...

You are forgetting that it actually takes 15 seconds (give or take, based on the map size and the distance the shells have to travel) before the shots are fired and the time it takes for them to land on the target. If you got 2 people at the flag, it takes less then 15 seconds to turn the flag.

So, if you played smart and went to the flag with a squad, you will turn it and get out of it before the arty strikes. If you were .... not so smart and went rambo to the flag, you will prolly pay for this mistake by being killed by the arty.

and when theres only 30 people in an army instead of 3000, I think its much more realistic to have as many people fighting as possible then have half the team manning the commander's artillery battery. If you want to be the middle man, great. Thats what player controlled artillery peices are for. commander abilities are all AI controlled, but theres nothing stopping players from using artillery or flying a plane (well... exept maybe the other team).

The BF2 system could work for a Sevastopol map. Calling in a strike from the Gustav artillery piece. >=D

???, you choose a point for the bombing and lot of seconds later the area is bombed in random locations, exactly like in the real WW2, one arti officer receives coordinates from scouts and shoot the guns in that area. BTW, you can hear the shells coming some seconds before so you can search cover, and then you start to pray.

One of the best BF2 features

I see your point McGibs, but I fear the downsides of it:
In organized team play all it takes is to mark down the exact coordinates of every flag and the opposing team can expect an artillery attack every time they grey a flag? Would this mean you would have to send "kill the commander artillery squads" before you attack a flag?

What level of skill does it involve in using the commander artillery? Since I haven't tried the system itself in BF2, I don't know what skill level it requires, but if it is only a matter of point and click, which some people have indicated, I dont see what skills you need to be successful at it. I spoke to a friend about BF2 and he said the point and click was too easy and requiered no skill. Is this true?
ok, the best way to explain this is for you to just go and see first hand what its like in BF2. you own the game apparently. fire it up for 5 seconds and play with some bots.

Atrillery strikes are a team resource, they can be used for many different things. From softening up an objective before an attack (like real life) to counterattacking a captured objective (like real life) and anything in between. When you grey a flag, you can expect a counter attack. It doesnt take much to hide behind some rocks, or inside a building to up your chances of surviving the expected artillery. if youre just standing out in the open, and can hear big shells whistling down on your position, youre an idiot. Artilly was, after all, the largest killer in ww2.

Point n click is a wrong way to describe it, cause in BF2 15 seconds pass between the "click" and the actual shells landing. Everyone can hear the arty firing in the distance, so those that care for their live move away.

In those 15 seconds, unless a person is a complete retard (read: slow thinking person), there will be no original targets that you saw when you clicked on the arty 15 seconds ago.

Arty works great by prediction (predicting where the enemy forces will be in 15 seconds), i.e. en-route to the flag, not at it. Or for flushing out enemy defenders from wherever they are hiding

Even in BF2, the location of the shells is pseudo-random, and none of the shells land directly where you clicked. Even if a tank was stupid enough to stay still at the area where the arty is being fired, even if the arty "crosshair" was dropped right on him, 90 of the times, that tank will escape only slightly damaged, cause none of the shells will land on him.

And whats the problem in competition/organized play? If an "organized" team takes a flag, it's going to be more then 1 person on the flag. The time for them to turn the flag from grey to their side is far less then the 15 seconds it takes for arty to reach its location + the reaction time of the commander. Even if the "organized" team encounters enemy defenses at the flag, and the flag will remain grey for prolonged period of time, they are still safe, cause a good commander will not drop arty on his own troops at that flag and he will wait untill they all die. And after they all die, you will have enough people there to turn it and get out before the arty strikes.

I play BF2 with my clan in TWL and in CAL. Arty is always there, doesn't mean it ruins the game, it only enhances it, since the team has to take far more factors into the consideration now. Arty cannot hit two flags at once, so splitting forces works great. Furthermore, the reload time is long enough to try several flags before the arty is ready to fire.

As i said, if you think that in BF2 an arty can single handendly stop an attack on the flag... i don't know what game you are playing (or not playing in your case).

That's how arty is in BF2. And in FH, i am sure the arty will be even more dispersed (less chance of hitting something) with even longer reload times.
