Artillery

Can someone point me to an artillery instruction page or somesuch? I understand the basic principals, but I'm having trouble using the big guns effectively.

I line the arrow up on the crosshairs, adjust my little deflection and elevation markers to what I think is in the ballpark, and then when I fire the view jumps wildly and oh-so-slowly returns. I have yet to see any of my rounds impact unless the target is in visual range.
Seems I should be able to "walk em' in", but I'm having no luck.

Re: Artillery

That is why after almost 2 yrs of battlefield I still suck at artillery other than it being direct fire. :D

Re: Artillery

Keep in mind the velocity of the gun you are using. The straightest one is the 88 (other than on Foy), I believe the one with the highest arc is the American 105. The camera points in the direction of your round, so it seems you are shooting too high up.

An excelent map to practice on is Charlie Sector, you have nebels and built in artillery guns. Make sure you have some spotters.

Re: Artillery

its tuff to use. I could never get the total hang of it. Just keep trying until your close, then slowly tweak the settings. it takes me like 10 shots to just get INTO the enemy territory

Re: Artillery

the highest arc is the Mortar...and the FHDefgun150mm....don't know if it has changed name though

Re: Artillery

I love using the artillery if someone would just give me a decent spot. The big guns that have real flat trajectories are the most difficult to hit something with unless you can see the target for your self. The mortars and howitzers in this mod rock.

Re: Artillery

Beast of War (FH forum member) once made a superb arty guide. It's a shame I can't find a link of it anymore. So you have to do with this guide made by Teddy ''1313-Evil_Homer'' Pierson:

Re: Artillery

Katusha's are great for this, you have 7 rounds to home in with before a rather quick reload. Stand near an ammo crate and let death fall from the sky till some-one decides to stop you.!

Re: Artillery

I often wondered how people rate the importance of arty in this game, I don't play on-line much and was thinking about getting into the arty and AA area, being as most of the tanks and planes are always used, and there better with them then I would be,just did not want a bunch of people pissed off becuse I use the arty more them grabbing flags, what do you all think?

If used correctly it can completely change the outcome of the game or end up ruining the game through base rape.

Re: Artillery

its not that hard, but mortars ar redundant.

we need he american and german 155mm and the brit 45 inch with the american M40 SPG!

Re: Artillery

I've read BOW's arty guide before and it did help but I found targeting and walking in your shots takes more practice and time than I guess I was willing to put in, and sometimes the camera just acts skewed. The learning process for arty can be rough for some as I'd imagine tk'ing being easy to do with arty.

Targeting mortars is sometimes just :uhoh: and especially difficult if you're not on flat ground but it's always fun to give it a go even if it's just once in a while.

I wish I could be more proactive with artillery, I wonder if BF2's artillery system will be enhanced/tweaked in some way to make it a bit easier for people.

Re: Artillery

only thing i have against artillary, is pixel aiming.
you should only be able to fire when, you have and use, a spotter.
this would allow for some breaks in the damn barrage...and make it slightly less accurate.
i think, pixel-aiming takes much of the fun out of many "potentially really good" maps.
instead these maps are just a bunch of arty spam all map long...because far to many people use this cheap, game ruining, so called tactic.
any tactic that allows scores of 100+ kills, 0 deaths. and grinds the game to a halt for everyone else, is definately a problem. as an example.. many times ive seen the germans lose "omaha charlie sector" because their own arty wont stop spamming the bunker, allowing the axis to re-cap the bunker. tk'ing anyone that trys. if the axis lose the bunkers they lose the map, by bleeding out. pixel aiming allows for absolutely no break in the barrage, all map long. and is far to accurate.
so i dont have the best feeling about arty right now..

as for the "close support arty"(mortors) THEY ROCK!

Re: Artillery

I've been using arty for as long as I've been playing Battlefield, since the golden year it was game of the year. It's kinda easy to learn, but it takes a while to get to perfection. I practice with FH mortars often, and I use them for precision tankkilling. It's not easy to hit that small a target with a direct hit, but if you do it's a one hit kill http://forums.filefront.com/images/smilies/_wg.gif . I love how the FH mortars fire like true mortars, not like those crappy BFV ones.

But hey, there's nothing wrong with artillery baseraping. After all, you're not entering the mainbase

Seriously, I'd rather have 10 tanks raping the base than some artillery pixeling. You can at least shoot the tanks with fausts and maybe PAKs, but what can you do about an artillery that is kilometers awayhttp://forums.filefront.com/images/smilies/curse.gif. And no, I'm not targetting this to any particular person

Hey Bikewar,

Quite some time ago I posted a similar thread to yourself : http://forums.filefront.com/showthre...4&page=1&pp=25

There were some great tips posted but unfortunately I seem to lack the skill to do anything with them. Like yourself I'm just mystified by what's happening.

Maybe I should set aside another hour some evening for some practice.

Re: Artillery

Great news to all you people pissed off by pixel-aimers, but perhaps bad news for the other 5 of you. BF2 has rotating skyboxes - so it will be pretty much impossible to pixel aim, unless you memorise the entire skyline at a certain height, and then use a landmark from the ground, inwhich case I think you deserve to get some kills for your troubles.
If FH2 (I'm assuming it's moving to BF2 obviously) incorporates BF2's "Only commanders can use artillery" stance, then pixel aiming won't be a problem. I'm guessing it won't, but it's all up to the devs. It would be very cool for a commander to be able to aim their artillery a bit more accurately at a line of tanks. It's all looking very good really.

Re: Artillery

FH's artillery is a sad sad affair. 1 priest and 27 shermans is what the game is now, because the FH devs get a boner every time a Panther rolls by.

i like using artillary, infact i love it, only problem is no one under stands how to spot so i hardly ever have anything to shoot at

Re: Artillery

Artillery is lame! Get in a tank and fight man to man. No more expresso latte mochachinos for your lazy weak little "hold the button down and get kills" artillery whores.

I can use artillery properly but dont out of choice. When you fire, the camera that moves is looking DIRECTLY at the projectile you fired. You can trace it's velocity and trajectory by sight that way. Sometimes, you're not going to get a shot into the spotted zone even after several attempts. You'll run out of ammo or get killed before that. Its just part of the game. Most artillery "whores" are pixel-aiming. They set the arty up somewhere and aim at a spot in the skybox that they have pre-tested and know that it will land the arty in your spawn or something else completely lame. Most GOOD artillery-users won't get a lot of kills, because people aren't stupid enough to keep spawning under fire, and some of THEM are smart enough to sneak out and kill the spammer..

Arty is pretty much a dead end either way you look at it. Its weak against vehicles unless you get a direct hit, its slow to reload inbetween shots (especially with the Brumbaar) and once you line up your sights on the spot, the flag is already taken and its friendly :P.
