I've read BOW's arty guide before and it did help but I found targeting and walking in your shots takes more practice and time than I guess I was willing to put in, and sometimes the camera just acts skewed. The learning process for arty can be rough for some as I'd imagine tk'ing being easy to do with arty.
Targeting mortars is sometimes just and especially difficult if you're not on flat ground but it's always fun to give it a go even if it's just once in a while.
I wish I could be more proactive with artillery, I wonder if BF2's artillery system will be enhanced/tweaked in some way to make it a bit easier for people.
only thing i have against artillary, is pixel aiming.
you should only be able to fire when, you have and use, a spotter.
this would allow for some breaks in the damn barrage...and make it slightly less accurate.
i think, pixel-aiming takes much of the fun out of many "potentially really good" maps.
instead these maps are just a bunch of arty spam all map long...because far to many people use this cheap, game ruining, so called tactic.
any tactic that allows scores of 100+ kills, 0 deaths. and grinds the game to a halt for everyone else, is definately a problem. as an example.. many times ive seen the germans lose "omaha charlie sector" because their own arty wont stop spamming the bunker, allowing the axis to re-cap the bunker. tk'ing anyone that trys. if the axis lose the bunkers they lose the map, by bleeding out. pixel aiming allows for absolutely no break in the barrage, all map long. and is far to accurate.
so i dont have the best feeling about arty right now..
as for the "close support arty"(mortors) THEY ROCK!
I've been using arty for as long as I've been playing Battlefield, since the golden year it was game of the year. It's kinda easy to learn, but it takes a while to get to perfection. I practice with FH mortars often, and I use them for precision tankkilling. It's not easy to hit that small a target with a direct hit, but if you do it's a one hit kill . I love how the FH mortars fire like true mortars, not like those crappy BFV ones.

But hey, there's nothing wrong with artillery baseraping. After all, you're not entering the mainbase
Seriously, I'd rather have 10 tanks raping the base than some artillery pixeling. You can at least shoot the tanks with fausts and maybe PAKs, but what can you do about an artillery that is kilometers away. And no, I'm not targetting this to any particular person
There were some great tips posted but unfortunately I seem to lack the skill to do anything with them. Like yourself I'm just mystified by what's happening.
Maybe I should set aside another hour some evening for some practice.
Great news to all you people pissed off by pixel-aimers, but perhaps bad news for the other 5 of you. BF2 has rotating skyboxes - so it will be pretty much impossible to pixel aim, unless you memorise the entire skyline at a certain height, and then use a landmark from the ground, inwhich case I think you deserve to get some kills for your troubles.
If FH2 (I'm assuming it's moving to BF2 obviously) incorporates BF2's "Only commanders can use artillery" stance, then pixel aiming won't be a problem. I'm guessing it won't, but it's all up to the devs. It would be very cool for a commander to be able to aim their artillery a bit more accurately at a line of tanks. It's all looking very good really.
