Berlin 1945

Just been playing Berlin and found that it was a tad of a spam. Not that spam's a bad thing but in moderation of course. Perhaps a suggestion or two would be to actually reduce the number of nades the Germans have, given their superiority in weapons and armour [I'd rather have 2 jadgpanzers in ambush than a lone IS2... usually with a newbie driver] and to put bazookas in crates in case a jadgpanzer decides to roll up and set up camp there [indeed I'd even say get rid of zookas altogether given that noone is going to spawn with a weapon that only as 2/3 targets max at any time].

Re: Berlin 1945

That map has always sucked since it came out in vanilla. What really ought to be done is a new Berlin map that's a real street fight up to the Reichstag. Something similar to Arnhem, but with almost no vehicles and a lot more rubble. Also, no ammo crates, and automatic weapons as pickup kits only to prevent spammage/whorage.

There was a King Tiger outside the Reichstag and quite a few Russian tanks IIRC... now THAT would be cool [I was sooooo hoping for a King Tiger Duel at the end of that piece of shit game COD and did they have it? no I fucking hate that game]

You should try out KingRudolfs Berlin_Streets_1945 beta.

It's not yet released, but looks hella good.

Here's few screenies:

I played it....its very good....a bit dark, but my gamma lift helped that...

Anyway, its good for infantry, plenty of hiding spaces its a good map

I <3 King Rudolf. He makes the bestest maps.

But I can't play this until it comes out on FH, don't like fiddling with third party maps with BF anymore :\. Oh when is Berlin Outskirts going to make a return?

I love Rudolfs berlin map, can't wait till he finishes playing HL2 (i think it was HL2?) and gets back to the mapping! :p

Re: Berlin 1945

Rudolf's maps have been basically good, though Berlin Outskirts needed work at least for pub play.

I prefer the style of street fighting found in Arnhem, myself -- a single pathway to a final objective, but with a few minor alleys to skirt around maybe one building or another. Still, they all funnel into one general path, as opposed to having two or three or five paths to a flag (which makes defending a bitch). A Berlin map taking this same approach would be a blast, so long as it wasn't infested with nothing but PPSh/StG44 users. I could stand maybe one or two tanks, but it should be mostly an infantry map, not a vehicle map (and NO JEEPS OR APCS!! None of this "run to the back flag" BS).

Oooh, come to think of it, another good map would be a Stalingrad Streets map. You could have a couple rifle classes, with the Russians having one class carrying Molotov cocktails! This would be great if we had true open-topped Wespes or other german self-propelled guns. Now that we've got the kickass flame graphics, this could really work!

Ah yes, molotovs would be nice..

Solo,a street fighting map without automatic weapons?
Hell, just make it spades and knives, why bother with firearms at all?
It just keeps the servers busy, thus creating lag.

Is Berlin Street only at night? I can't see anything at night, not even someone that is 1 feet away from me :(

Arisaka January 4th, 2005 11:03 AM

Re: Berlin 1945

it's not at night, it's just very dark, melancholic and smokey. you'll be able to see perfectly fine, but it's easy to get lost without a map. (seriously easy!!)

Solo4114 January 4th, 2005 11:08 AM

Re: Berlin 1945

Well, gee, we could always go in the other direction and give everyone an FG42 then, huh? See, the ol' reductio ad absurdum goes in both directions. ;)

Besides, I don't mean completely devoid of automatic weapons, just that you wouldn't spawn with one. You could still leave pickup kits around. I don't see anyone complaining about the number of FG42s (there's three) on Berlin at the moment. I just don't see a reason why everyone should have one. And believe me, in a close combat map, everyone WILL have one if given the choice. Play Berlin some time and see how many Axis players take something OTHER than an MP40 or StG44. Remember Foy back in 0.6 or so when everyone on Axis would take the MG42 spawnable kit? Yeah, that's my point.

When automatic weapons are available in unlimited amounts, it turns urban maps into random spray 'n' pray quake-fests. I don't know about you, but I don't play FH to get a quake-like experience. If I wanted that, I'd be playing CS:S.

Oh, and 13th, my thoughts EXACTLY. :)

Re: Berlin 1945

I simply like to use a smg,not a rifle.

If it`s not spawnable, the map goes to the "disconnect upon loadingscreen" list.

You'll be missed.

Re: Berlin 1945

a fallschirmgewer 42 is a rifle and a machine gun...so its perfect!
and open parts of the map you switch over to singel shot! if you in a nerow street,
you switch to automatic,.i love the fg42 its perfect..te only problem is you dont have nades wth you..
..so i think its a good id giving everybody a Fg42,!
but If its realistic i dont know,...i dont think al last german troops in berlin shouldt walk around with a Fg42...

Solo4114 January 4th, 2005 12:40 PM

Re: Berlin 1945

Actually, if everyone had an FG42, it wouldn't be realistic. Nor would it be fun. In fact, it would suck what little fun is left to be had on that map right out the door, especially if it had nades with the kit. My suggestion was made to illustrate the ridiculous nature of saying "Oh gee why not get rid of ALL the guns." The logical obverse of that being "Oh gee, why not give everyone the PERFECT gun."

Re: Berlin 1945

Kingrudolf's map looks good, but laggy. Can any testers tell us the framerate you get on this map compared to the framerate in other FH maps (excluding the heavy ones like Eastern Blitz and Counterattack, etc.)? Furthermore, any AI? All good maps must have AI.

Arisaka January 5th, 2005 12:13 AM

Re: Berlin 1945

AI is the last thing that gets added, otherwise you would not only have to revise spawns, statics, ground formation and textures, but also something you can't see.

i'm sure that this map will get AI as soon as it is ready for it.

i have not played it with a lot of people, but i can't remember any lag on it. maybe with some shooting (sounds) it would lag, but i'm not sure.

Re: Berlin 1945

You know, HL2 runs better on my crappy outdated, inferior comp than FH.. it's just that the engine is better. And HL2 was a piece of cake.. took me about.. four days to beat it. Well, it takes some intelligence offcourse, but eh.. Streets is optimized to the bone, I can't reduce anything to the lag anymore. You'll have to lower your sound settings. As for Outskirts.. I can't really seem to put much together with the FH trenches. I could do a quick replacement for the old, laggy trenches though..

Wich idiot would ever select a rifle to fight in confined house to house street combat with ??????

And that without ( realistic ) close range rifle attack attributes such as rifle buttstock melee action or
rifle attached bayonets ?????

MP40 and PPSH were mass produced weapons....... I'd have one in a confined house to house streetcombat
maps like that, since SMG and automatics are much more usefull there and call it rediculous and not realism at
all if we have only rifle kits there.

You don't need a SMG in large open fields....you need it in cities.....

Re: Berlin 1945

Hi all,

That new Berlin map looks fantastically apocalyptic and intimidating. I always enjoy King Rudolf's maps, they're always good and grim.

As for Outskirts of Berlin, what a classic meat-grinder of a battle, it's also one of the few (only?) maps with a proper front line. I'm greatly looking forward to it's return.

Cathal
